Short answer: when the key fob on your Mitsubishi Outlander CW (2006–2012) gets weak, split the fob open and swap the CR2032 3V coin cell. No re-coding is needed — it works straight away.
When the Fob Needs a New Battery
A low fob battery shows as shorter range — you have to be close to lock or unlock, and keyless entry/start becomes unreliable. A fresh CR2032 restores it. If the fob is completely dead you can still start the car (see our dead-fob start guide) — but replacing the cell is the real fix.
Replace the Fob Battery (CR2032)
- Slide out the emergency key blade from the fob first.
- Split the fob halves apart at the seam (a coin or small flat tool in the slot helps); don’t lever the electronics.
- Lift out the old cell and fit a fresh CR2032 3V, matching the polarity (usually + facing up).
- Clip the fob back together, refit the key blade, and test lock/unlock and keyless start.
Use a good-quality CR2032 — cheap cells often give poor range in these fobs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does a Mitsubishi Outlander key fob take?
A CR2032 3V lithium coin cell — the standard, widely-available type.
Do I need to reprogram the fob after changing the battery?
No. Fit the new cell and it works immediately — no synchronisation or coding required.
How do I open the Outlander key fob?
Slide out the emergency key blade first, then split the two halves at the seam with a coin. Removing the blade releases the catch so you don’t crack the case.
Range is still short with a new battery — why?
Check the cell is a good-quality CR2032 and seated the right way round. If it’s still weak, the fob electronics may be failing.
