Reinitialise the Electric Windows

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated September 11, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Mitsubishi Outlander Mk2 (CW) 2006-2012.

Short answer: if the one-touch windows stop working on your Mitsubishi Outlander CW (2006–2012) after a flat or disconnected battery, re-initialise each one: with the ignition on, hold the window-close switch until the glass is fully shut and keep holding for about 2 seconds, then release. Repeat for each window.

Why One-Touch Stops After a Battery Change

Each window learns its fully-closed position so the one-touch (auto up/down) and anti-trap functions know where the top of travel is. Disconnecting the 12V battery, or a flat battery, clears that reference, so the window only moves while you hold the switch. Re-initialising teaches it the closed position again.

Re-initialise the Windows

  1. Switch the ignition on (engine off).
  2. Close the driver’s window fully using its switch.
  3. With the window shut, keep holding the close switch for about 2 seconds, then release.
  4. Repeat for the passenger’s window (and the rear windows if they have one-touch).
  5. Check that auto up/down works, then switch the ignition off.

If It Still Won’t Work

If a window reverses before it shuts, run the sequence again and be sure to hold the switch for a couple of seconds once the glass is fully closed, so anti-trap re-learns the top of travel. If the switch does nothing at all, that points to a switch, motor or wiring fault rather than a lost initialisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my Outlander windows only move while I hold the switch?

They lost their learned closed position — usually after the battery was disconnected or went flat. Re-initialise each one: close the window fully, hold the close switch about 2 seconds, then release.

Do I need a tool to reset the windows?

No — it’s done from the window switch with the ignition on.

Do I have to do every window?

Do each window that lost one-touch. The driver’s and front passenger’s are the usual ones; repeat the same hold-to-close step at each.

The window still reverses near the top — what now?

Run the procedure again and hold the close switch for a couple of seconds after the glass is fully shut, so the anti-trap reference is relearned.
