Changing a blown bulb on a Nissan Note Mk2 (E12) / Versa Note is a job most owners can do at the roadside. The steps below cover how to reach and swap the main exterior bulbs. Rather than list every wattage — which changes with market and trim, and is wrong as often as it’s right — the reliable approach is to read the type off the old bulb, its holder or your handbook and buy the same again.
Find the Right Bulb First
The main headlight on most Notes is a single H4-type halogen bulb (called 9003 in North America) that does both dip and main beam — around 60/55 W in Europe and 65/55 W on the US Versa Note. The smaller bulbs (indicators, side, tail, brake, reverse, number plate) and the fog lamps “if equipped” vary by market and trim, and some cars use LED units for the door-mirror indicators and high-level brake light that aren’t owner-replaceable. So always confirm the exact bulb on your own car before buying.
How to Change an Exterior Bulb
- Switch everything off and let the bulb cool — halogen bulbs get very hot. For headlight work it’s tidiest to turn the wheel away from the side you’re working on, or remove the arch liner clips if access is tight.
- Headlight: from inside the engine bay, twist off the round cover behind the headlamp, unclip the wiring plug, release the spring clip or twist the bulb holder, and withdraw the bulb.
- Front indicator / side: reach behind the headlamp unit and twist the bulb holder anticlockwise to remove it; the bulb pulls or twists out of the holder.
- Rear cluster (tail / brake / indicator / reverse): open the tailgate, remove the access cover or the couple of screws holding the light unit, then twist out the relevant bulb holder from the back.
- Fit the new bulb the same way round. On a halogen headlight bulb, don’t touch the glass with bare fingers — skin oil creates a hot spot that shortens its life; handle it by the metal base or use a tissue.
- Refit the holder, clip and cover, then test the light before you drive off.
Frequently Asked Questions
What headlight bulb does a Nissan Note E12 take?
Most use a single H4-type halogen (9003 in North America) that combines dip and main beam. Confirm it against the old bulb or your handbook, as a few builds differ — the marking is stamped on the metal base or the bulb box.
Why won’t my new bulb light / why did it blow again quickly?
Check the holder is fully seated and the plug is clicked home, and that you fitted the right type. A bulb that blows again soon after may point to moisture in the lamp unit or a wiring fault rather than a bad bulb.
Should I change headlight bulbs in pairs?
It’s worth it — the second original bulb is usually near the end of its life too, and a matched pair keeps both sides the same brightness and colour. It also saves a second roadside job soon after.
My indicator flashes fast — is that a bulb?
Usually yes. A fast-flashing indicator normally means a blown turn-signal bulb on that side (or, if someone has fitted LEDs, a resistance mismatch). Replace the failed bulb and the flash rate returns to normal.
Can I replace the LED units?
The door-mirror indicators and the high-level brake light on some trims are sealed LED units, not owner-serviceable bulbs. If one fails, it’s a unit-level repair — the halogen bulbs listed above are the ones you can change yourself.
