These instructions apply to the Volvo S40 Mk2 (544) 2004-2012.

After an oil service the Volvo S40 shows a service reminder in the dash. You clear it yourself with the trip-reset button on the wiper stalk and the ignition — no tools and no dealer visit. The timing matters, so read the steps through once before you start.
Reset the S40 service reminder

- Turn the ignition key to position 1 (dash lights, engine off).
- Press and hold the trip-recorder RESET button on the wiper/indicator stalk.
- Within two seconds, and while still holding the button, turn the ignition on to position 2.
- Keep the RESET button held for about 10 seconds until the service indicator flashes.
- Release the button within four seconds of it flashing. A signal sounds to confirm the reminder is reset.
If you do not release the button within four seconds the reset does not take, so simply switch off and repeat the sequence from the start.
Frequently asked questions
Which button is the reset button on the S40?
It is the small trip-recorder button on the end of the left-hand stalk (the same one you press to switch between the trip and total odometer). There is no separate “service” button.
The reminder came straight back — why?
Almost always the button was released too late or too early. The release has to happen in the four-second window after the indicator flashes; try again and watch for the flash.
Does this reset the actual service?
No — it only clears the reminder. Do the oil and filter change first, then reset the light so the next interval counts from the correct point.
If a warning light other than the service reminder is on, you can look up the fault code on autodtcs.com.
