These instructions apply to the Volvo S40 Mk2 (544) 2004-2012.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.
If the automatic S40’s battery is flat or a fuse has blown, the gear lever locks in P and the car cannot be rolled or towed. There is a manual shift-lock override next to the selector that frees the lever in under a minute.
Release the S40 gear selector from Park
- Apply the handbrake and, if you can, switch the ignition to position 1 so the brake lights work.
- Prise off the small cover beside the gear selector to expose the override.
- Insert a thin screwdriver (or the tool from the kit) into the hole and press and hold the release switch inside.
- With the switch held, move the gear lever out of P to N.
- Release the switch and refit the cover. The car can now be rolled or towed.
The lever only needs to reach N (neutral) for the wheels to turn — you do not need to select any other gear.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my S40 stuck in Park?
The shift-lock solenoid needs 12 V and a brake-pedal signal to let the lever leave P. A flat battery, a blown stop-light fuse or a faulty brake switch all leave the lever locked, which is exactly when this override is needed.
Where is the override cover?
It is the small removable panel on the selector surround, right next to the lever. It clips out with gentle leverage.
Do I need to fix anything after using it?
Yes — the override is only to move the car. Recharge or replace the battery, or trace the blown fuse or brake-switch fault, before relying on the gearbox again.
