Replace a Headlight Bulb

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 3, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Hyundai i30 Mk3 (PD) 2017-Present.

Most Hyundai i30 Mk3 (PD, 2017–present) models use a halogen H7 bulb for both low and high beam, which you can change yourself from inside the engine bay. Higher trims with full-LED headlamps are sealed units and are a dealer job. This guide lists the i30’s bulb types and the general way to change a front bulb.

i30 Mk3 Bulb Types

  • Low beam: H7 (55 W) — halogen headlamps
  • High beam: H7 (55 W)
  • Front fog lamp: HB4 (51 W)
  • Front indicator: PY21W (amber)
  • Side light / daytime running light: W5W or LED, depending on headlamp type
  • Rear brake/tail: P21/5W (or LED), indicator PY21W, reverse W16W, rear fog PY21W
  • Number-plate light: festoon (5 W)

Cars with LED headlamps (the projector units with an LED signature) don’t use a replaceable H7 bulb — the module is sealed.

How to Change a Front Headlight Bulb

  1. Switch the lights and ignition off and open the bonnet.
  2. At the back of the headlamp, remove the round cover to reach the bulb holder.
  3. Unclip the wiring/retaining clip and withdraw the bulb.
  4. Fit the new bulb without touching the glass — skin oil creates a hot spot that shortens bulb life. Hold it by the metal base or use a cloth.
  5. Refit the clip and the cover, then test the light before closing the bonnet.

Access is tight on the i30; some owners find it easier to reach the bulb after removing the air-filter box (left headlamp) or the washer-bottle neck (right headlamp). Always replace bulbs in pairs so both sides match in brightness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What headlight bulb does the Hyundai i30 take?

Halogen cars use an H7 (55 W) for low and high beam. The front fog lamp is an HB4 (51 W).

Can I replace the LED headlight bulbs myself?

No. Full-LED headlamps are sealed modules with no owner-replaceable bulb — that’s a dealer or specialist repair.

Why shouldn’t I touch the glass of a new bulb?

Oil from your fingers causes a hot spot that can fail the bulb early. Handle halogen bulbs by the base or with a clean cloth.

If a bulb-out warning or lighting code is stored, look it up on autodtcs.com.
