Carry Out a Manual DPF Regeneration

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 4, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Toyota Hilux Mk8 (AN120/AN130) 2016-2024.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If your Hilux shows “DPF full See owner’s manual” or “DPF full Manual regeneration required”, the diesel particulate filter has clogged because of too many short, low-speed trips. You can burn it clean yourself — either by driving, or by starting a stationary regeneration with the DPF switch on the dash.

The DPF notice: when the indicator lights, park safely and press the DPF switch to start a regeneration.

During a regeneration the idle speed rises, the exhaust smells different and a little white smoke is normal. Never run a stationary regeneration in a garage or near anything flammable — the exhaust gets very hot.

Starting a manual DPF regeneration

  1. Try driving first: with a warm engine, drive continuously at around 60 km/h (37 mph) for 20–30 minutes, avoiding stops. The message clears when regeneration finishes.
  2. If the message will not clear, park in a safe, open area away from dry grass or other flammable material.
  3. Shift to P (automatic) or N (manual) and firmly set the parking brake. Leave the engine running and warmed up.
  4. Press the DPF system switch. The display confirms regeneration has started and the idle speed increases.
  5. Wait 15–40 minutes without touching the accelerator or clutch — pressing either one stops the process. Regeneration is complete when the message disappears and the idle returns to normal.

If the idle is still around 2000 rpm about 10 minutes in, the exhaust may be too cool: briefly hold the engine at roughly 3000 rpm to raise the temperature. Stationary regeneration will not run above 4000 m (13,000 ft) altitude.

When to see a dealer instead

If the display reads “DPF full Visit your dealer” and the engine warning (MIL) light is on with a buzzer, the filter is too far gone for a driver regeneration — have it inspected before driving further, or you risk expensive damage.

Frequent DPF warnings usually mean your journeys are too short for the filter to reach temperature; longer motorway runs help. Use only the specified low-ash (low-SAPS) diesel engine oil, or you will clog the filter faster.

If a P24xx or P2002-type DPF fault code is stored, decode it first on autodtcs.com before clearing it.
