A blown headlight bulb on the Hilux is a quick DIY fix on halogen models — you reach the bulb from behind the headlight in the engine bay, with no need to remove the whole unit. The trick is matching the right bulb type for your lights.
Hilux bulb types
Which bulbs you have depends on whether the truck has combined or separate high/low beams:
- Combined high/low beam (halogen type A): H4 (60/55 W)
- Separate beams (halogen type B): low beam H11 (55 W), high beam HB3 (60 W)
- Front fog lights: H16 (19 W)
- Position / daytime running light: 21/5 W wedge bulb
- Front turn signal: 21 W
LED headlights are sealed units and are not a DIY bulb change — see a dealer. Check your bulb against the wattage table in the owner’s handbook if unsure.
Replacing a halogen headlight bulb
- Switch off the lights and ignition and open the hood. Work on a cool bulb.
- At the back of the headlight, unclip the rubber dust cover.
- Unplug the connector, release the wire spring clip (or twist the bulb holder anticlockwise, depending on type) and withdraw the bulb.
- Fit the new bulb without touching the glass — skin oil creates a hot spot that shortens its life. Hold it by the metal base, or wipe it with alcohol if you do touch it.
- Refit the clip/holder, the connector and the dust cover, then test both beams.
Always replace bulbs in pairs so both sides match in brightness and color temperature, and check your aim after fitting.
