Both the hood and the fuel-filler flap on the Hilux are released from inside the cab, by two pull levers low down on the driver’s side. They are easy to mix up the first time, so here is where each one is and how to use it.
Opening the hood

- Find the hood release lever low on the driver’s side under the dash — it carries a small bonnet/hood symbol. Pull it; the hood pops up slightly.
- At the front of the truck, slide the secondary catch (under the leading edge of the hood) to one side and lift the hood.
- Support it on the prop rod if there is no gas strut.
Opening the fuel-filler flap
- Pull the fuel-filler release lever next to the hood lever — it carries a fuel-pump symbol. The flap on the left rear of the body unlatches.
- Open the flap, then turn the fuel cap slowly anticlockwise to release pressure before removing it.
Before fuelling, switch the engine off and keep the doors and windows closed. Turn the cap slowly — a hiss is normal as tank pressure escapes; wait for it to stop before removing the cap fully.
FAQ
The fuel flap won’t open. Make sure you pulled the correct lever (fuel-pump symbol, not the hood symbol) fully. In cold weather a frozen flap may need a gentle push by hand while pulling the lever.
Which side is the fuel filler? On the Hilux the filler is on the left-hand rear of the body.
