Home/GMC/Sierra 1500/Mk3 (K2XX) 2014-2018/Reset the Oil Life

Reset the Oil Life

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 11, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the GMC Sierra 1500 Mk3 (K2XX) 2014-2018.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

When a 2014–2018 GMC Sierra 1500 (K2XX) is due for service it posts CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON on the Driver Information Center. The reminder runs on the GM Oil Life System, and once you’ve changed the oil and filter you zero it from the DIC yourself — the same system GMC shares with the Chevrolet Silverado. No scan tool is needed on any trim from the base Sierra to the SLT and Denali.

  1. With the engine off, switch the ignition to ON/RUN. On DIC-button trucks any gear is fine; trucks without DIC buttons have to be in P (Park).
  2. Thumb the steering-wheel DIC buttons (or the trip-odometer stem) across to the OIL LIFE REMAINING readout.
  3. Hold the ✓ (Set/Reset) button — or the trip-odometer stem — for a few seconds. The figure jumps to 100% and the service message clears.

Accelerator-pedal alternative (no DIC buttons)

  1. Ignition ON/RUN, engine off, with OIL LIFE REMAINING displayed.
  2. Press the accelerator to the floor slowly, three times inside five seconds.
  3. A reading of 100% confirms the reset.

Should the message reappear next time you start up, the reset didn’t register — run through it again.

FAQ

Does the Denali’s display change the steps?

No. Whether your Sierra has the base cluster or the uplevel DIC on an SLT or Denali, the OIL LIFE REMAINING screen and the Set/Reset hold are the same.

Which oil and how much?

A dexos1 oil — 5W-30 on the 4.3L V6, and 0W-20 on the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 for 2016 and later (2014–2015 V8s used 5W-30). The V6 holds 6.0 qt, the V8s 8.0 qt.

Can I reset it without changing the oil?

You can, but you shouldn’t — the percentage is the truck’s estimate of oil condition, so zeroing it early just hides when the next change is really due.

Is this the low-oil-pressure light?

No. CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON is a service reminder. A red oil-pressure light means stop and check the level now.

The GMC Sierra 1500 is mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, so this procedure is the same on both trucks — see our Chevrolet Silverado 1500 guides.

If your Sierra logs a trouble code with the warning light, decode it on autodtcs.com.
