Every 2014–2018 GMC Sierra 1500 carries a direct TPMS sensor in each road wheel (the spare has none). Rotate the tires or swap a sensor and the truck needs to be told which sensor now sits where — a Tire Learning relearn. On Sierras with the uplevel DIC it’s a five-minute DIY job with a cheap GM relearn tool; it mirrors the Silverado’s procedure.
- Inflate all four to the placard pressure (table below), set the parking brake, and turn the ignition ON without starting.
- Bring up the tire-pressure page on the DIC (right-hand steering-wheel buttons on the uplevel cluster; trip-odometer stem on the base one).
- Hold the Set/Reset control until the horn double-beeps and TIRE LEARNING ACTIVE appears. The truck wants the driver-front wheel first.
- Hold the relearn tool to the sidewall by the driver-front valve and trigger it — a chirp means that corner is matched.
- Work clockwise: passenger-front → passenger-rear → driver-rear, one chirp each.
- A final double-beep ends the relearn. Switch off and top every tire to the placard figure.
The first wheel has a two-minute window and the whole relearn five minutes — if it lapses, restart from Tire Learning.
GMC Sierra 1500 tire pressures
GMC sets the Sierra’s cold pressures by fitted tire size and prints the exact figures on the Tire and Loading Information label on the driver-side center (B) pillar. Use that placard as the authority; the usual factory figures by size are:
| Tire size | Front (cold) | Rear (cold) |
|---|---|---|
| 255/70R17, 265/70R17 (P-metric) | 35 psi | 35 psi |
| 265/65R18 | 35 psi | 35 psi |
| 275/60R20, 275/55R20, 275/50R22 | 32 psi | 32 psi |
| LT265/70R17, LT275/65R18 (AT4 / heavy-duty / tow) | 45 psi | 45 psi |
Check them cold and match your placard — AT4 and trailer-rated fitments often run higher than the LT and SLT road tires.
FAQ
What tool does the Sierra need?
A GM-compatible TPMS relearn tool (around $15). It wakes each sensor so the truck can read its ID — a DIY purchase, not a dealer-only tool.
There’s no Tire Learning on my DIC.
Base Sierras with the low-level cluster don’t offer it; those relearn at a shop or with a scan tool.
Does the AT4 or trailer package change anything?
No — the relearn is identical. Just use the higher placard pressures that come with LT or trailer-rated tires.
Light won’t clear after the relearn.
Re-check cold pressures against the placard and run it again; a dead sensor battery won’t report and needs replacing.
The GMC Sierra 1500 is mechanically identical to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, so this procedure is the same on both trucks — see our Chevrolet Silverado 1500 guides.
