Reset the Oil Life

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Ford Explorer Mk5 (U502) 2011-2019.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 2011–2019 Ford Explorer (U502) uses the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, which you reset from the information display with the steering-wheel buttons after each oil change. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Switch the ignition ON (engine off) and open the information-display menu with the steering-wheel 5-way controls.
  2. Select Settings, then Vehicle (dual-LCD cluster) or Convenience (base 4.2-inch cluster), then Oil Life Reset.
  3. With Percent Oil Life shown, press and hold OK until it resets to 100%.

After every oil and filter change; the interval runs up to a year or 10,000 miles.

What oil does it take?

5W-20 on the 3.5L V6 (6.0 qt), 5W-30 on the 2.0L and 3.5L EcoBoost (5.7–6.0 qt).

Does the 2.3L EcoBoost use the same reset?

Yes — the 2.3L (from 2016) resets the same way through the Settings menu.
