Reset the Oil Life

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Ford Explorer Mk6 (U625) 2020-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The 2020-and-newer Ford Explorer (U625) uses the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitor, reset from the instrument-cluster menu with the steering-wheel buttons after each oil change — not the SYNC touchscreen. This is the US-market procedure.

  1. Ignition ON (engine off). From the cluster main menu, scroll to Settings, then Vehicle.
  2. Select Hold OK to Reset and press and hold OK until the cluster shows Reset Successful and 100%.

FAQ

Can I reset it from the SYNC screen?

No — on the U625 the oil reset lives in the instrument-cluster Settings menu (steering-wheel buttons), not the touchscreen.

What oil does each engine take?

5W-30 on the 2.3L and 3.0L EcoBoost (5.2–6.0 qt); 0W-20 on the 3.3L hybrid (6.0 qt).

When do I reset it?

After every oil and filter change; the interval runs up to a year or 10,000 miles.

If your Explorer stores a fault code with the warning light, look it up on autodtcs.com.
