Specifications, Dimensions and Weights

Reviewed by the Service Reset editor · Updated October 14, 2026 · How we verify

These instructions apply to the Ford Explorer Mk5 (U502) 2011-2019.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Full specifications for the fifth-generation Ford Explorer (U502, 2011-2019) — the unibody, car-based Explorer, by engine. Covers the 290 hp 3.5L V6, the four-cylinder EcoBoost (2.0L then 2.3L) and the 365 hp twin-turbo 3.5L EcoBoost Sport. All used a 6-speed automatic. Towing and output are cross-checked; a 2016 facelift lengthened the body slightly.

Each column is one specific vehicle — a single engine or motor and, where shown, body style. Dimensions and several weights are specific to that body and drivetrain; other body or powertrain versions differ, so match the column to your own vehicle.

Sources: Owner's manual. Where an owner’s manual or homologation figure exists it takes precedence; workshop data fills only what those omit.

A dash (—) means we haven’t verified that figure for that variant yet. Figures are US-market. GVWR and some capacities aren’t published by the maker for every model, so they may be blank; your door-jamb label is the authority for weights and tire pressures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What engines did the 2011-2019 Explorer offer?

A 290 hp 3.5L V6, a 240 hp 2.0L EcoBoost (2013-15, FWD only), a 280 hp 2.3L EcoBoost (2016-19), and the 365 hp twin-turbo 3.5L EcoBoost Sport.

How much can it tow?

Up to 5,000 lb with the 3.5L V6 or EcoBoost Sport and the proper Class III tow package; the four-cylinders tow less (2,000-3,000 lb).

Is this Explorer front- or rear-wheel drive?

Front-wheel drive based, with available all-wheel drive — unlike the rear-drive-based sixth-generation car.

Where are the tire pressures?

On the door-jamb Tire Label; the mini-spare takes 60 psi.

Disclaimer: Specifications vary by model year, trim and options. Confirm critical figures (towing, weights, tire sizes) against your own vehicle’s door label and documents.
