The 12V battery on the 2002–2008 Dodge Ram 1500 sits at the front of the engine bay, behind the driver’s-side headlight. Always disconnect the negative terminal first.
Expect the radio presets and clock to clear, and a P1684 “battery disconnected” code to appear — both are normal and clear on their own.
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, switch the ignition to LOCK and turn off all accessories.
- Locate the battery behind the driver’s-side headlight and lift the protective cap off the positive (+) post.
- Loosen and remove the negative (−) cable first, then the positive (+) cable. Tuck both clamps aside so they cannot touch a post.
- Do your work. To reconnect, fit the positive (+) cable first, then the negative (−) last, and tighten both.
- Start the engine and let it idle a few minutes, then drive gently through several stops so the PCM relearns idle and shift settings. Reset the clock and radio presets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a 2002–2008 Ram 1500?
At the front of the engine compartment, behind the driver’s-side headlight. The positive post has a protective cap you lift to reach it.
Why does my Ram shift oddly after a battery disconnect?
The transmission adaptive settings were cleared and relearn over a few drive cycles. A P1684 code is also normal after a disconnect and self-clears.
Which terminal comes off first?
Always the negative first when disconnecting, and the negative last when reconnecting — this avoids a short if a wrench touches metal.
