Home/Nissan/Note/E12 (2013 - 2017)/Perform Emergency CVT Shift Lock Release

Perform Emergency CVT Shift Lock Release

These instructions apply to the Nissan Note E12 (2013 - 2017). For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

In some cases, the gear selector of the Nissan Note (Versa Note) may become stuck in P (Park). This can happen if the battery is weak or discharged, or if the shift lock mechanism is faulty. The emergency release allows you to place the lever in N (Neutral) so the car can be pushed or towed safely.

Important Safety Notes

  • Always set the parking brake firmly before starting this procedure.
  • Use wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from rolling unexpectedly.
  • Never attempt to drive long distances while using the emergency release — it is only intended to move the car to a safe spot.

Emergency Shift Lock Release Procedure

  1. Make sure the ignition is in the OFF or LOCK position.
  2. Apply the parking brake securely.
  3. Locate and press the shift lock release button near the gear lever.
  4. While holding the release button, press the gear lever button and move the lever into N (Neutral).
  5. Switch the ignition to the ON position to unlock the steering wheel if the vehicle needs to be steered.

Additional Information

  • If the battery is completely flat, the steering wheel may remain locked. In this case, the car can only be moved straight ahead unless the battery is recharged.
  • If the gear lever cannot be moved out of Park while the engine is running and the brake pedal is pressed, there may be an issue with the brake light switch. Faulty brake lights are a safety hazard and should be repaired immediately.
  • Persistent problems with the shifter should be diagnosed by a professional, as they may indicate a fault with the Xtronic CVT shift lock system.
