Change and Check Automatic Transmission Fluid A4CF0

These instructions apply to the Kia Picanto (JA) 2017 - Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

The Kia Picanto JA (2017–present) with the A4CF0 automatic transmission requires regular fluid changes to keep gear shifts smooth and extend gearbox life. This guide explains how to drain, refill, and check the transmission fluid level in a DIY-friendly way.

When to Change ATF

  • Every 60,000 km or 4 years, whichever comes first.
  • Sooner if the vehicle is used for city driving, towing, or frequent stop/start conditions.
  • If fluid looks dark, smells burnt, or contains debris.

Tools & Supplies Needed

  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Torque wrench
  • Drain pan
  • Funnel and hose (for refilling)
  • Car jack and axle stands (or ramps)
  • Clean lint-free cloth
  • ATF fluid: use Kia SP-IV or approved equivalent

Fluid Capacity

  • Drain and refill: approx. 3.5–4.0 litres
  • Complete dry fill: approx. 5.7 litres

Step 1: Draining the Fluid

  1. Raise the vehicle and secure with axle stands.
  2. Place a drain pan under the transmission.
  3. Remove the drain plug and let the fluid drain completely.
  4. Clean the plug and replace the sealing washer if necessary.
  5. Refit the drain plug and tighten to 39–49 Nm.

Step 2: Refilling

  1. Remove the oil level indicator tube/dipstick.
  2. Using a funnel and hose, refill with fresh ATF fluid.
  3. Add approx. 3.5 litres initially.
  4. Reinstall the dipstick temporarily.

Step 3: Circulating the Fluid

  1. Start the engine and let it idle.
  2. Move the gear selector slowly through all positions (P → R → N → D), pausing for 3–5 seconds in each.
  3. Return the selector to P and keep the engine running.

Step 4: Checking the Fluid Level

  1. Allow the transmission to warm up until the fluid temperature is around 70–80 °C.
  2. Park on a level surface with the engine idling.
  3. Remove the dipstick and check the fluid level.
  4. The fluid should be at the HOT mark on the dipstick.
  5. If low, add fluid in small amounts and recheck.
  6. If overfilled, drain a little fluid until correct.

Inspection

  • Check drained fluid for contamination or metal particles.
  • Fluid should be bright red and clean — burnt smell indicates overheating.

Troubleshooting & Tips

  • Always use the recommended Kia SP-IV ATF — other fluids may cause slipping or damage.
  • Check fluid level with the car running and on level ground.
  • Do not overfill — excess fluid can foam and cause shifting problems.
  • Dispose of used ATF responsibly at a recycling centre.
