If the touchscreen in your Kia Picanto (Mk3, JA, 2017–Present) has frozen on one screen, gone black, lost the reversing camera or stopped responding to taps, you can force the head unit to restart yourself in under a minute — no tools and no trip to the dealer.
Which system the Picanto uses
The Mk3 Picanto shipped with Kia’s small Display Audio / UVO head unit — a 5-inch or 7-inch floating touchscreen on the dash top (the 8-inch “Kia Connect” navigation screen came on later GT-Line and facelift cars). All of them are touch-operated with a single power/volume rotary knob on the left of the unit and a row of hard shortcut keys below. A frozen Picanto screen is almost always a software lock-up in the head unit itself; the engine, lights and heater keep working because only the display has stuck. The reboot uses that volume knob.
Soft reset (reboot) the screen
Park with the ignition on (engine running or in accessory) so the unit stays powered.
- Find the power/volume knob — the rotary dial on the left edge of the touchscreen that you push to mute.
- Press and hold it in firmly.
- Keep holding for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black and the Kia logo reappears.
- Release the knob.
- Wait 30–60 seconds for the home screen, radio and camera to reload.
Some Picantos also have a tiny pinhole RESET on the bezel beside the knob. Straighten a paperclip, press the recessed button and hold for about 5 seconds until the screen blacks out; this does exactly the same job as the knob-hold.
Safe — it loses no data
This reboot is harmless. It does not wipe your radio presets, paired phones, Bluetooth pairings or settings — the unit just reloads its software. Repeat as often as you need.
If it stays frozen
- Hold longer. If 10 seconds did nothing, retry and hold the knob for a full 20–30 seconds.
- Cycle the ignition fully. Switch off, open the driver’s door, lock the car and walk away for a couple of minutes so the unit powers down; then unlock and restart.
- Suspect the phone link. If freezes happen when you plug in for Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, unplug, swap to a known-good USB cable and delete then re-add the pairing.
- Disconnect the battery. As a last resort, disconnect the negative (−) battery terminal for 10 minutes, then reconnect — a full power-down clears a stubborn lock-up.
Factory reset (erases data — rarely needed)
A factory reset is separate from the reboot and only worth doing if you are selling the car or chasing a persistent glitch. On the touchscreen go to Setup → General → Reset (or Settings → System → Restore Factory Settings on navigation units) and confirm. It wipes paired phones, presets, favourites and personal settings back to factory defaults, so only do it on purpose.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will rebooting my Picanto lose my radio presets and paired phone?
No. Holding the volume knob or pressing the pinhole only reloads the software — presets, Bluetooth pairings and settings stay. Only the factory reset in the menu clears them.
Where is the reset pinhole on the Mk3 Picanto?
If your unit has one, it is a tiny recessed hole on the bezel close to the power/volume knob, marked RESET. Not every Picanto trim has it — if yours doesn’t, just hold the volume knob instead.
My Picanto screen goes black on its own — is that a fault?
Usually a software hiccup in the Display Audio unit. Reboot with the knob, then a full ignition cycle; if it keeps happening, a Kia dealer can flash the latest head-unit software, which fixes most recurring freezes.
Is it safe to drive with the Picanto screen frozen?
Yes. The head unit is independent of the engine and brakes — you only lose audio, phone and the reversing camera. Reboot when safely parked.
The reversing camera is stuck on screen — will the reboot fix it?
Often, yes. A frozen camera image is the same software lock-up; the knob-hold reboot clears it. If the camera view never returns after rebooting, have the camera and its wiring checked.
