Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Suzuki Vitara Mk4 (LY) 2015-2024. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 17, 2026

The Suzuki Vitara Mk4 (LY/APK, 2015–2024) — the fourth-generation Vitara, returning the model name to the European market as a compact crossover after the Grand Vitara era, built in Esztergom (Hungary) — uses a hold-and-rotate button reset that’s distinctive among modern crossovers. The cluster button is a rotary control rather than a simple push button — you turn it as well as press it. The procedure is identical across every LY engine variant (1.0 BoosterJet K10C, 1.4 BoosterJet K14C, 1.6 M16A naturally-aspirated petrol, 1.6 DDiS D16AA diesel) and consistent between pre-facelift (2015–2018) and facelift (2018–2024) cars.

When to Reset the Service Indicator

  • After completing an oil and filter change.
  • If the spanner / wrench symbol or “Oil change required” appears on the cluster at startup.
  • If you bought the Vitara second-hand and the previous owner didn’t clear the indicator.

⚠️ On the LY Vitara the service indicator tracks the oil-change interval. Other items (brake fluid every 2 years, coolant every 5 years on Suzuki Super Long Life Coolant, the timing chain is non-serviceable on K10C / K14C BoosterJet engines, timing belt on the 1.6 DDiS diesel) aren’t tracked by the cluster.

Before You Start

  • Park on a level surface with the engine off. Complete the actual oil and filter change before the reset.
  • Identify the cluster control. On the LY Vitara it’s a rotary push-button at the bottom of the cluster face (typically below the speedometer or between the dials, depending on trim). You both press it (to confirm/enter) and rotate it clockwise / anticlockwise (to scroll menu items). Same button cycles the trip-meter readouts in normal use.
  • If your Vitara has a steering-wheel multifunction control set, those replicate the cluster’s rotary functions through up/down/OK buttons — the procedure works the same way either via the cluster button or the wheel buttons.

Tools and Supplies

None for the reset itself. For the oil change: fresh Suzuki-spec oil — 0W-20 ACEA C5 for the 1.0 / 1.4 BoosterJet K10C / K14C turbocharged petrol engines (the official Suzuki spec; lighter than older Vitara grades for fuel economy), 5W-30 ACEA A5/B5 for the 1.6 M16A naturally-aspirated petrol, 5W-30 ACEA C2/C3 for the 1.6 DDiS diesel (DPF-compatible); a new spin-on filter (different parts per engine); a 14 mm sump-plug socket (BoosterJet) or 17 mm (M16A / DDiS); torque around 25 Nm (BoosterJet) or 35 Nm (M16A / DDiS).

Service Indicator Reset — Step-by-Step

  1. Turn the ignition ON with the engine off. Key position II on key-start trims; on Smart Key trims press START/STOP without a foot on the brake.
  2. Wait a moment for the cluster to fully wake.
  3. Press and hold the cluster button for 5 seconds. The cluster enters the settings sub-menu.
  4. Release the button.
  5. Turn the button clockwise to scroll through the settings menu.
  6. Stop on “Oil change”.
  7. Press the button (a single press, not a hold) to enter.
  8. The cluster shows the oil-change interval status with a “Reset OC” option.
  9. Highlight “Reset OC”.
  10. Press and hold the button again for 5 seconds.
  11. The display shows “SUCCESS”. The reset is complete.
  12. Switch the ignition off to exit.

Verify the Reset Worked

Switch the ignition off, wait 30 seconds, then cycle ignition back on. The spanner / Oil change required warning should be gone. Cycle the cluster button to the Oil change interval screen — the remaining distance should now show the full new interval (typically 10,000 miles / 15,000 km or 12 months for European-spec LY Vitara petrol; the 1.6 DDiS diesel uses 12,500 miles / 20,000 km or 24 months).

Troubleshooting

  • The 5-second hold doesn’t open the settings menu. Count out loud — the Vitara needs a full 5 seconds. Holding for 4.5 seconds is on the edge and sometimes doesn’t trigger. Hold longer.
  • Turning the button clockwise doesn’t scroll. Two common causes: (a) you missed the menu entry — the rotary scroll only works for about 10 seconds after the 5-second hold opened the menu; (b) the Vitara’s cluster firmware version uses a different scroll direction on some pre-facelift cars — try anticlockwise instead.
  • I can’t find “Oil change” in the menu. The LY Vitara cluster’s settings menu has multiple sub-sections. On the pre-facelift (2015–2018) firmware, “Oil change” may be labelled “OCI” (Oil Change Interval, same as the Mk3 Swift). On the facelift firmware it’s spelled out. Either way it’s the entry that shows distance until next oil change.
  • “SUCCESS” doesn’t appear. The second 5-second hold needs to be in the Reset OC view — not the main Oil change view. Press the button once first to enter Reset OC, then start the 5-second hold.
  • Reset works but the warning comes back after a few miles. 12V battery condition is the usual cause. The LY Vitara cluster is sensitive to voltage drop during cold cranking, particularly on the BoosterJet turbo variants. Load-test the battery; replace if older than 5 years.
  • I drive a Vitara Hybrid (post-2020) — same procedure? Yes. The 1.4 BoosterJet 48V mild-hybrid (introduced in 2020) and the 1.5 Strong Hybrid (introduced in 2022 for some markets) both share the LY cluster and procedure. The mild-hybrid system uses a separate auxiliary 12V battery alongside the standard one — load-test both if the reset doesn’t persist.
  • S-Cross — same procedure? The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (JY, 2013–2022) shares the LY Vitara’s cluster generation and uses the same reset path. We’ll publish a dedicated S-Cross guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the spanner symbol on the Suzuki Vitara mean?

On the LY Vitara the spanner / wrench icon is the oil-change reminder. It illuminates when the configured distance since the last reset has been reached. It does not indicate an engine fault. Engine faults trigger the orange check-engine light (an engine-outline icon, different shape).

How often does the LY Vitara service indicator come up?

Suzuki’s official European-market schedule for the LY Vitara:

  • 1.0 BoosterJet petrol (K10C): 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.4 BoosterJet petrol (K14C): 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.6 M16A petrol: 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.6 DDiS diesel: 12,500 miles (20,000 km) or 24 months.
  • 1.4 BoosterJet 48V mild-hybrid (post-2020): 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.5 Strong Hybrid (select markets, post-2022): 9,000 miles (15,000 km) or 12 months.

UK severe-service / short-trip driving typically halves the petrol interval to 4,500 miles or 6 months.

Does the reset clear engine fault codes?

No. The reset zeros the oil-change counter only. Engine fault codes are stored in the engine ECU and need a scan tool. For DTC interpretation see autodtcs.com.

Is the procedure similar to the Suzuki Swift Mk3?

Yes. The Suzuki Swift Mk3 (2010–2017) uses essentially the same rotary-button hold-and-scroll procedure. The Swift’s earlier firmware used the “OCI” label rather than “Oil change”; the procedure is the same.

What about the SX4 S-Cross?

The Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (JY, 2013–2022) shares the LY Vitara’s cluster generation and uses the same reset path. Same hold-rotate-press-hold sequence. We’ll publish a dedicated S-Cross guide.

I drive a Suzuki Jimny — same procedure?

No. The Suzuki Jimny (GJ, 2018+) uses a different cluster with a simpler trip-button-only reset. We’ll publish a dedicated Jimny guide.

Will resetting the indicator extend my Suzuki warranty?

No. Suzuki’s warranty depends on actual service work being documented in the service book, not on what the cluster reports. The cluster reset is purely a convenience reminder.
