Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Ford Focus Mk IV (DEH) 2019-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: May 17, 2026

The Ford Focus Mk4 (DEH/C519, 2019–present) — the fourth-generation Focus hatchback / Estate / Active crossover, built in Saarlouis (Germany) for European markets on Ford’s C2 platform, sold across pre-facelift (2019–2022) and facelift (2022–present, with SYNC4 infotainment) variants in 1.0 EcoBoost (B7DA/B3DA/SFDC, 74–92 kW), 1.0 EcoBoost mHEV mild-hybrid (M0DC/B7DC, 92–114 kW, 2020+), 1.5 EcoBoost three-cylinder petrol (114 kW), 1.5 EcoBlue diesel (70/88/110 kW), 2.0 EcoBlue diesel (110/140 kW), and the 2.3 EcoBoost (206 kW Focus ST) — uses Ford’s cluster-menu Oil life reset. There are two slightly different menu paths depending on whether your Focus was built before or after 26 April 2020, when Ford pushed a firmware update that renamed the menu items. Both methods are owner-accessible — no diagnostic tool needed.

When to Reset the Service Indicator

  • After completing an oil and filter change.
  • If the cluster shows “Oil change required” or an oil-life percentage that has counted down to 0%.
  • After a scheduled service that includes an oil change.

⚠️ Ford’s Oil life algorithm calculates remaining oil life based on engine running hours, idle ratio, oil temperature, and driving conditions — not a fixed mileage. Reset only after an actual oil change with the correct Ford-spec oil; resetting without changing oil leaves the engine running on degraded oil with no warning.

Before You Start

  • Park on a level surface with the engine off, then turn the ignition on without starting (push START once without depressing the brake — first press wakes the instruments, two presses puts it in IGN-ON).
  • Complete the actual oil and filter change before the reset.
  • Identify your build date from the VIN plate (driver-side B-pillar) — Ford’s date code is in the format `WWY` (week, year, month-letter). Build dates of 26 April 2020 (week 17, year 2020) or earlier use Method 1; 27 April 2020 onwards use Method 2. The 2022 cosmetic facelift adopted SYNC4 and uses Method 2 universally.
  • Locate the cluster controls — left-hand steering-wheel pad with up/down/left/right plus OK button. The MENU button (Method 1 only) is on the centre face of the steering wheel below the cruise controls on pre-facelift cars.

Tools and Supplies

None for the reset itself. For the oil change, fresh Ford-spec oil — 5W-20 ACEA C5 / Ford WSS-M2C948-B for the 1.0 EcoBoost (B7DA family) and 1.5 EcoBoost; 0W-30 ACEA C2 / Ford WSS-M2C950-A for the 1.5 / 2.0 EcoBlue diesel; 5W-30 ACEA A5/B5 / Ford WSS-M2C913-D for the 2.3 EcoBoost ST. A new spin-on filter (different parts for the EcoBoost three-cylinder and the EcoBlue diesel — confirm by engine code); a 17 mm or 24 mm sump-plug socket depending on engine; torque around 20 Nm. Capacity: 1.0 EcoBoost takes 4.1 L with filter; 1.5 EcoBoost takes 4.3 L; 1.5 EcoBlue diesel takes 4.0 L; 2.0 EcoBlue takes 5.0 L; 2.3 EcoBoost ST takes 5.7 L.

Method 1 — Pre-26/04/2020 Build

For Focus Mk4 cars built up to and including 26 April 2020.

  1. Turn the ignition ON (engine off — press START once without the brake).
  2. Scroll through the menu on the cluster display using the left steering-wheel pad arrows.
  3. Select ‘Settings’.
  4. Press the ‘MENU’ button on the steering wheel to enter Settings.
  5. Scroll to and select ‘Information’.
  6. Press OK to enter.
  7. Scroll to and select ‘Oil life’.
  8. Press and hold the OK button until the cluster confirms the reset (typically 3–5 seconds; the percentage returns to 100%).
  9. Switch the ignition off. Reset complete.

Method 2 — Post-27/04/2020 Build (Includes 2022 Facelift)

For Focus Mk4 cars built from 27 April 2020 onwards, and all 2022-onwards facelift cars with SYNC4. Ford simplified the menu by removing the “MENU button → Information” intermediate step.

  1. Turn the ignition ON (engine off).
  2. Scroll through the menu on the cluster display using the left steering-wheel pad arrows.
  3. Select ‘Settings’.
  4. Select ‘Vehicle’.
  5. Select ‘Oil life’.
  6. Press and hold the OK button until the cluster confirms the reset.
  7. Switch the ignition off. Reset complete.

Verify the Reset Worked

Switch the ignition off, wait 30 seconds, then cycle back on. The Oil life warning that was appearing at startup should be gone. Navigate back to Settings → Information → Oil life (Method 1) or Settings → Vehicle → Oil life (Method 2) and the percentage should now read 100%. Typical Mk4 Focus oil-life intervals:

  • 1.0 EcoBoost / 1.5 EcoBoost petrol: up to 20,000 miles (32,000 km) or 12 months — algorithm-driven, often shorter in real use.
  • 1.5 / 2.0 EcoBlue diesel: up to 20,000 miles (32,000 km) or 12 months.
  • 1.0 EcoBoost mHEV (2020+): up to 20,000 miles (32,000 km) or 12 months — the 48V system doesn’t change the oil interval.
  • 2.3 EcoBoost ST: 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months — Ford shortens the interval for the ST.

UK severe-service / short-trip driving will count the Oil life algorithm down faster. Real-world UK Focus Mk4s often signal at 10,000–14,000 miles even on the EcoBoost.

Troubleshooting

  • (Method 1) The MENU button doesn’t enter Settings. The MENU button is the small button on the steering-wheel face below the cruise controls — easy to mistake for a cruise button. Try pressing it once briefly while the cluster is on the home screen. If your car has the SYNC3 / SYNC4 touchscreen but a basic cluster, the cluster Settings menu is separate from the touchscreen Settings — make sure you’re on the cluster, not the centre screen.
  • (Method 2) The cluster doesn’t have a ‘Vehicle’ submenu. If your car is from before 27/04/2020 the menu structure follows Method 1 (Information → Oil life). If from after but the menu is missing, your firmware may not be current — Ford dealers can update via IDS.
  • The reset takes but the warning returns at the next start. 12V battery condition. Load-test; replace if older than 5 years on Start-Stop AGM-equipped cars. The Mk4 Focus AGM is in the boot.
  • Oil life shows less than 100% after a successful reset. The algorithm may take a few miles to settle to 100% on some firmware versions. Drive for 15 minutes after the reset and switch off properly — don’t cycle ignition rapidly.
  • Focus ST (2.3 EcoBoost) — same procedure? Yes for both methods. The ST uses the same cluster firmware; the shorter oil interval is built into the algorithm.
  • Focus Active (crossover variant) — same procedure? Yes. Active is a body-style / suspension variant; cluster electronics and reset are identical.
  • 2022 facelift Focus with SYNC4 / digital cluster — same procedure? Yes, Method 2. The SYNC4 facelift moved the climate controls onto the touchscreen and added a 13.2-inch screen, but the cluster-side Oil life reset still lives under Settings → Vehicle → Oil life with the OK hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Oil life warning on the Mk4 Focus mean?

The Oil life percentage is Ford’s condition-based service indicator — when it reaches 0% the cluster shows “Oil change required”. It’s separate from the orange CEL / engine-check warning and from any specific fault codes.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

No. Both methods (depending on build date) are owner-accessible via the cluster steering-wheel controls. Ford IDS / FORScan can also reset Oil life via OBD-II but it isn’t required.

How do I tell if my Focus is before or after the 26/04/2020 firmware change?

The simplest test: enter the cluster Settings menu (left steering-pad arrows → OK). If you see ‘Vehicle’ as a sub-item, you’re on Method 2 (post-27/04/2020). If you see ‘Information’ instead, you’re on Method 1 (pre-26/04/2020). Build date is also on the VIN plate (driver B-pillar) and on the V5C V5C registration document under “First Registered”.

Does the reset clear engine fault codes?

No. The reset zeros the Oil life counter only. Engine fault codes need a scan tool. For DTC interpretation see autodtcs.com.

How often does the Focus Mk4 service indicator come up?

Ford’s published maximum is 20,000 miles (32,000 km) or 12 months on non-ST variants. The algorithm shortens it based on driving conditions — UK city use typically triggers at 10,000–14,000 miles. Ford ST is fixed at 10,000 miles / 12 months.

Is the procedure the same as the Focus Mk3 (DYB)?

No — the Focus Mk3 (DYB, 2011–2017) uses the older Ford cluster with a fixed mileage counter reset via a brake + accelerator combination at ignition-on. The Mk4 introduced the Oil life algorithm and the menu-driven reset.

What about the Focus Mk5?

Ford discontinued the Focus in Europe in 2025 with no direct successor. The Mk4 (DEH) is the final-generation European Focus. North American Focus production ended even earlier in 2018.
