Program a Key Fob and Replace the Battery

These instructions apply to the Ford Fiesta Mk7 (2008-2017). For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 4, 2026

If a remote no longer locks your Ford Fiesta Mk7 (2008–2017), or you have bought a spare fob, you can often program it yourself — the Mk7 Fiesta supports an owner-level remote-programming routine done entirely with the ignition key, with no diagnostic tool. This guide covers programming the remote control(s) and renewing the fob’s button cell, the two jobs owners most often need. Note the important distinction below between the remote and the transponder chip.

Remote vs. Transponder — Read This First

Your Fiesta key does two separate things:

  • The remote control locks and unlocks the car by radio. This is what the routine below programs, and you can do it at home.
  • The transponder chip in the key head is what the immobiliser reads to let the engine start. Programming a brand-new transponder so the car will start usually requires dealer-level equipment or a locksmith — the home routine only covers the remote, so it suits a remote that has lost its lock/unlock function or a fob you are pairing for central locking.

If your existing key already starts the car but the buttons have stopped working, the procedure below is exactly what you need.

Programming the Remote Control

You can program up to eight remotes to a Mk7 Fiesta. Have every remote you want to work with you before you start, because the routine pairs them in one session.

  1. Insert the key into the ignition switch.
  2. Within 6 seconds, turn the ignition from off to position II (ignition on, just before cranking) and back, four times in quick succession.
  3. Turn the key back to position 0 (off).
  4. You should hear an audible signal (a chime or lock-actuator sound). This confirms the car has entered remote-programming mode.
  5. Within 10 seconds, press any button on the first remote. A further sound confirms it has been accepted.
  6. To add more remotes, press a button on each one in turn — you have a 10-second window between each. Do not remove the key while programming.
  7. When all remotes are done, turn the key on and remove it to exit. Test that each remote locks and unlocks the car.

If the car does not chime when you expect programming mode, you were probably too slow — the ignition cycles must be done within the 6-second window. Start again, a little quicker.

Renewing the Key Fob Battery

A weak button cell is the most common reason a remote works only from a few inches away or not at all. The Mk7 Fiesta came with two fob styles.

Type 1 — Remote Clipped to a Bladed Key

  1. Insert a small flat screwdriver into the seam of the remote housing.
  2. Gently unclip the remote unit from the main key and separate the two halves of the case.
  3. Lift out the old CR2032 cell.
  4. Fit the new CR2032 with the positive (+) side facing downwards (as the original sat), then clip the case back together.

Type 2 — Integrated Flip/Remote Key

  1. Press and hold the release/flip button and remove the metal key blade.
  2. Remove the key cover to expose the battery.
  3. Take out the old transmitter button cell and fit the new one the same way round.
  4. Reassemble in reverse order.

After a battery change the remote keeps its programming — you do not need to re-run the routine above. If the range is still poor with a fresh cell, the fob’s contacts may be corroded or the unit faulty.

Tools and Parts

  • A small flat-blade screwdriver to split the fob case.
  • A fresh CR2032 coin cell (most Mk7 Fiesta fobs; check your old one to be sure).
  • Your working ignition key for the programming routine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I program a Fiesta key to start the car at home?

No — the home routine only programs the remote (lock/unlock). Pairing a new transponder so the engine will start needs dealer or locksmith equipment because it involves the immobiliser.

My remote stopped working after a battery change — do I need to reprogram it?

Usually not; the programming is retained. Re-seat the new CR2032 (correct way round, clean contacts). Only run the programming routine if the buttons still do nothing.

How many remotes can I pair?

Up to eight remotes can be programmed to one Mk7 Fiesta.

The car won’t enter programming mode — what am I doing wrong?

Almost always the ignition cycles are too slow. The four off–on cycles must be completed within the first 6 seconds after inserting the key; try again more briskly.

If you have just reconnected the battery and the remote needs re-pairing, see our Ford Fiesta Mk7 battery disconnect/reconnect guide. For a key that no longer starts the car, an immobiliser fault may be stored — check the code meaning on autodtcs.com.
