The automatic start/stop system on the Ford Fiesta Mk7 (2008–2017) — fitted to most 1.0 EcoBoost models and some others — shuts the engine off when you stop and restarts it when you move away. It saves a little fuel in town, but many owners find it intrusive in heavy traffic or when manoeuvring. This guide shows how to turn start/stop off on a Mk7 Fiesta, an alternative way to stop it acting, and why the car switches it back on every time you start up.
How Start/Stop Behaves on the Fiesta
The system only cuts the engine when several conditions are met: the car is stationary, the engine is warm, the battery is healthy, the climate demand is satisfied, and (on a manual) the car is in neutral with the clutch up. If any of those are not met — cold engine, flat-ish battery, heater on full — the engine simply keeps running. That is the system working normally, not a fault. When it does stop the engine, the rev counter drops to a marked “0/Ready” zone or a green “A” symbol appears.
Method 1 — The Start/Stop Off Button
- With the engine running, find the start/stop button, marked with an “A” inside a circular arrow. On the Mk7 Fiesta it is usually in the switch panel on the centre console or low on the dash.
- Press the button once.
- The light in the button comes on (and a message may show in the cluster) to confirm the system is off.
- The engine will now idle normally at a standstill.
Press the button again to switch start/stop back on.
Method 2 — Seat Belt and Door Interlock
The Fiesta will not auto-stop the engine unless the driver’s seat belt is fastened and the driver’s door is shut. You can use this as a quick workaround:
- With the driver’s seat belt unbuckled, the engine will not enter auto-stop.
- Opening the driver’s door also inhibits the system.
This is only a stop-gap — you should stay belted while driving — but it explains why start/stop sometimes does nothing.
Why It Comes Back On Every Drive
The button only disables start/stop for the current drive cycle. Switch the ignition off and on, and the Fiesta re-enables it by default, because the system contributes to the car’s official fuel and emissions figures. There is no menu setting to make “off” permanent.
The only way to change the default is to recode the control module with a Ford-capable diagnostic tool (for example FORScan on a Mk7 Fiesta). That is an at-your-own-risk modification and may not be appropriate where the car must meet specific emissions rules.
Start/Stop Stopped Working? Check These First
- Battery state of charge low — the most common reason; the system protects the battery by not stopping the engine.
- Battery replaced but not registered — the charging system keeps it in a protective mode.
- Engine or cabin not at temperature — climate demand keeps the engine running.
- A stored fault — a battery-management or engine code can disable start/stop silently. You can check what a code means on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I permanently turn off start/stop on a Mk7 Fiesta?
Not with the button alone — it resets every time you restart the car. A permanent change requires recoding the module with a Ford diagnostic tool such as FORScan.
Is start/stop bad for the EcoBoost engine?
No. The engine, starter and battery are all designed for it, and oil pressure builds instantly on restart. The system also blocks auto-stop until the engine is warm.
Does disabling it use more fuel?
Only marginally, and only in stop-and-go traffic. On the open road it makes no difference, because the system only acts when you are stationary.
Why does the “A” have a slash through it?
That means auto-stop is temporarily unavailable because a condition is not met (cold engine, low battery, climate demand). It resumes on its own once conditions allow.
If a low battery is the cause, our Ford Fiesta Mk7 battery disconnect/reconnect guide covers replacing and resetting it.
