Release the Electronic Parking Brake Manually

These instructions apply to the Vauxhall Astra Mk6 (J/P10) 2010-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 5, 2026

If the electronic parking brake (EPB) on your Vauxhall Astra J (Mk6, 2010–2018) — the Opel Astra J elsewhere — will not release normally, you can release it manually. It is a common problem after a flat battery or a jump start, or if the brake has logged a fault: the yellow brake-warning light stays on, the car will not move, and pulling the switch does nothing. The Astra has an owner-level release sequence that needs no diagnostic tool — this guide shows it.

First, the Usual Cause

The EPB needs a healthy 12 V battery and working electronics to release. The number-one reason it sticks on is a low or flat battery — sort the battery first and the brake often releases by itself. After a jump start the system may also need the sequence below before it will let go. If the battery is fine and it still won’t release, a fault is likely stored.

Safety First

  • Block the wheels before releasing — the car can roll once the brake is off.
  • Do this on level ground.
  • If you jump-started the car, leave the donor pack or auxiliary supply connected while you do this.

How to Release the Astra J EPB Without a Tool

  1. Block the wheels. On an automatic, move the gear lever to P; on a manual, put it in neutral.
  2. Press and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Press the parking-brake switch and hold it for about 5 seconds. The yellow warning light flashes to show the system has entered the manual-release mode.
  4. Release the parking-brake switch.
  5. Press and release the parking-brake switch once more.
  6. Release the brake pedal. The parking brake is now released and the car can move.

If the sequence does not take, make sure your foot stayed firmly on the brake throughout and that the battery has enough charge, then try again.

After Releasing

This frees the brake — it does not fix what caused it. If a flat battery was to blame, see our Astra J battery disconnect/reconnect guide for replacing and resetting it. If the battery is healthy but the EPB keeps sticking, the car will have stored a fault code — you can look up what it means on autodtcs.com before booking a repair.

Important Note on Brake Pads

This guide covers the emergency release only. Winding the rear calipers back to change the brake pads on the Astra J needs the EPB put into service mode with a diagnostic tool — it is not a no-tool job, so we don’t cover pad renewal as a DIY procedure here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Astra electric handbrake stuck on?

Most often a low or flat 12 V battery, or the system needs resetting after a jump start. A brake-system fault can also do it. The release sequence above gets you moving; the cause still needs fixing.

Do I need a diagnostic tool to release it?

No — the brake-pedal-plus-switch sequence above is the owner method. A tool is only needed to put the EPB into service mode for a pad change, or to clear a stored fault.

The yellow light didn’t flash — what now?

Keep firm pressure on the brake pedal and hold the switch the full 5 seconds. If the battery is very low the system may not respond at all — connect an auxiliary supply and retry.

Is the Opel Astra J the same?

Yes — the Vauxhall and Opel Astra J are the same car, so this procedure applies to both.
