Reinitialise the Electric Windows

These instructions apply to the Mazda 3 Mk3 (BM/BN) 2013-2018. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

If the electric windows on your Mazda 3 Mk3 (BM/BN, 2013–2018) have stopped going up with a single touch, and now only move while you hold the switch, the window controller has lost its calibration. It happens after the battery is disconnected or goes flat, after a fuse is pulled, or after a window motor or regulator is replaced. The fix is a quick re-initialisation you can do yourself with no tools.

Why One-Touch and Anti-Pinch Disappear

Each door module stores the fully-open and fully-closed positions so it can run the glass automatically and stop it if it meets resistance (anti-pinch). A power loss clears those references, so until you re-teach them the window only inches while you hold the switch — which is why the Mazda 3 battery procedure lists a window initialisation as a follow-up step.

Before You Start

  • Turn the ignition on — do not start the engine; the switches must be live.
  • Keep fingers and objects clear of the glass — the anti-pinch protection is off during the relearn.

How to Re-initialise a Mazda 3 Window

The Mazda 3 teaches both end positions — fully open, then fully closed and held. Do this one window at a time:

  1. Turn the ignition on (engine off).
  2. Press and hold the window open switch until the window is fully open, then release.
  3. Pull and hold the close switch until the window is fully closed, and keep holding for about 2 seconds after it seats.
  4. Release and check operation — the one-touch up/down should now work.
  5. Repeat for the other windows.

If the Window Still Won’t Auto-Operate

  • You missed a step: the Mazda needs both the full-open and the full-close (held 2 seconds) taught — do them in that order.
  • Glass binding: clean and lubricate the window channel, then retry.
  • Just did a battery job: expected — see our Mazda 3 battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
  • No window will calibrate: the regulator, motor or switch may have failed and a fault may be stored — check the code on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnostic tool to reset the Mazda 3 windows?

No. The relearn is done entirely with the window switch as described.

Why do I have to open the window fully first?

The Mazda 3 teaches both end stops — fully open and fully closed — so it needs to see each extreme. Open fully first, then close and hold.

Why did more than one window lose one-touch at once?

Because they lost power together — almost always after a flat or disconnected battery. Re-initialise each one.

Is the anti-pinch working during the relearn?

No — keep hands and objects clear of the glass while teaching the end stops.
