Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Kia Sportage Mk4 (QL/QLE, 2016–2022) is a routine job for a battery change or before electrical work. No dealer registration is needed, but a few electronic settings need restoring afterwards — and you may see an ESP/stability light that clears with a quick steering relearn. This guide covers the safe order of work and everything to reset.
Where the Battery Is
The battery sits in the engine bay. Lift any cover to reach the two terminal clamps. If you are renewing it, fit a like-for-like battery — cars with the ISG (Idle Stop & Go) system use an enhanced (AGM/EFB) battery, so match the original specification.
Before You Disconnect
- Note your radio stations and personal settings (and any security code, if your audio uses one).
- Turn the engine off and make sure all electrical consumers are switched off.
- If working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, disconnect the battery and wait 3 minutes before handling those parts.
Disconnecting — Correct Order
- Turn the ignition off and open the bonnet.
- Slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
- Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.
- If removing the battery, undo the hold-down clamp and lift it out upright.
Reconnecting — Correct Order
- Refit the battery and secure the hold-down clamp.
- Connect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead last. Tighten both firmly.
- Turn the ignition on for a few seconds before starting the engine.
Clear the ESP Light (Steering Relearn)
If the ESP/stability-control warning light is on after reconnecting, Kia’s quick relearn fixes it:
- Turn the ignition on.
- Turn the steering wheel half a turn to the left, then half a turn to the right.
- Turn the ignition off, then start the engine — the warning light should go out.
What Else to Reset Afterwards
- Reset the date and time, the trip-computer settings, and reprogram your radio stations and preferences.
- Re-initialise the power windows if one-touch stops working (see our window initialise guide).
- Re-initialise the panoramic sunroof if fitted (see our sunroof initialise guide).
- Re-learn the tyre-pressure system by driving — the Sportage relearns automatically (see our TPMS reset guide).
- The ISG start/stop system may stay dormant until the battery is fully charged — normal for the first drive.
If a Warning Light Stays On
One or two lights right after reconnecting is normal and should clear on a short drive (or after the steering relearn). If the airbag, ABS or engine light stays on, a fault code was logged — reading it needs an OBD scanner, and you can look up what a Kia code means on our sister site autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register a new battery on a Sportage Mk4?
No dealer coding is required. Fit the correct AGM/EFB battery, reconnect, and restore your settings.
Why is the ESP light on after my battery change?
The steering-angle sensor loses its zero point. The half-turn-left, half-turn-right relearn above restores it and the light goes out.
Why won’t my windows auto-close after the battery change?
Disconnecting power clears the window motors’ learned positions. Run the simple re-initialise routine and one-touch returns.
How long should I leave it disconnected to reset the electronics?
Around 10–15 minutes with the doors shut lets the modules power down fully.
