If the remote on your Kia Cee’d Mk1 (ED, 2007–2012) has become weak — you have to stand close to lock or unlock — the fob’s coin cell needs replacing. The Cee’d key uses a CR2032 cell. This guide shows how. It takes a couple of minutes with a small screwdriver.
What You Need
- One fresh CR2032 3 V lithium coin cell.
- A small flat-blade screwdriver.
How to Replace the Cee’d Key Battery
- If your key has a fold-out blade, fold it out — this exposes the seam.
- Insert a screwdriver into the seam and gently twist to separate the two halves of the case.
- Lift out the old CR2032 cell, noting which way up it sits.
- Fit the new cell the same way round.
- Click the case back together and check the remote locks and unlocks the car.
Does It Need Programming?
No — replacing the coin cell does not affect the fob’s pairing, so the key keeps working immediately. A brand-new or replacement key must be programmed by a dealer or auto locksmith.
Frequently Asked Questions
What battery does the Cee’d Mk1 key take?
A single CR2032 3 V lithium coin cell.
My remote still won’t work with a fresh cell — now what?
Re-open it and check the cell orientation and that the contacts are clean. If it’s still dead, the fob may have a worn button or internal fault and need replacing.
Do I need to re-sync the remote after a battery change?
Usually not, but if it’s unresponsive, lock/unlock once with the key in the door or cycle the ignition, then try the remote again.
Can I program a spare key myself?
No — Kia key programming needs the dealer diagnostic tool. Only the battery swap is owner-doable.
