If the one-touch (auto up) function on your Kia Cee’d Mk1 (ED, 2007–2012) has stopped working — usually after a battery disconnection or a flat battery — the window needs re-initialising so it relearns its closed position. It is a 20-second job with no tools. This guide shows how.
On this generation of Cee’d the driver’s window has an express “auto up” feature — a single lift of the switch runs the glass all the way closed — together with anti-trap (pinch) protection that reverses the window if it meets resistance near the top. Both depend on the motor knowing where the fully-closed point is. When that reference is wiped by a power loss, the window still raises while you hold the switch, but the one-touch and auto-stop drop out. This is expected on a car of this age after any battery work; it is corrected by relearning the limit, not by replacing parts.
How It Works on This Model
The window motor remembers its closed position so the auto function and anti-trap (pinch protection) know when the glass is fully up. Cutting power clears that memory, so the window only moves while you hold the switch. Re-initialising restores it. Because the system judges the top of travel from the stored limit rather than a separate sensor, a clean hold at the very top during the relearn is what teaches it the correct closed point.
Before You Begin
- Turn the ignition on — the engine does not need to run.
- Sit at the affected door and use that door’s own switch.
- Make sure the window channel is clear so the glass can reach the very top.
- Keep fingers and objects out of the opening while the glass moves.
- If you have just reconnected the battery, check it is charged and holding first.
How to Re-initialise a Cee’d Window
- Turn the ignition on.
- Pull and hold the window close switch until the window is fully closed.
- With the window fully closed, keep holding the switch up for about 1 more second.
- Release the switch.
- Repeat for the passenger’s window using that door’s switch (where one-touch is fitted).
If It Still Won’t Auto-Close
- Repeat the procedure — the brief hold after the window reaches the top is what registers the limit.
- Make sure the glass reaches the very top — grit or perished runners can stop it short on a car of this age.
- Check the window fuse if the switch does nothing at all — a blown fuse leaves the motor dead rather than just un-learned.
- Clean and lightly lubricate the runners if the glass drags or rises slowly — friction can fool the motor into stopping early.
- Confirm the battery is healthy during the learn; a weak 12 V supply can interrupt the routine.
- After a battery disconnection, also re-initialise the sunroof if fitted.
After the Reset
Once relearned, a single lift of the switch should run the window fully closed on its own and the anti-trap reverse will work again near the top. The setting is stored, so it holds until the next time the battery is disconnected or goes flat — at which point you simply run the same short routine again.

Why did my Cee’d window lose auto after the battery was off?
Disconnecting power wipes the stored closed position, so auto and anti-trap switch off until you re-teach the window. The glass still raises while you hold the switch, but the one-touch express feature and the automatic stop at the top will not return until you relearn the limit.
The window goes up a bit then stops — why?
That is the anti-trap protection reacting because the limit isn’t learned. With no valid top reference the motor treats the travel as an obstruction and halts. Complete the hold-at-the-top routine and it clears once the correct closed position is stored again.
Do I need any tools?
No — just the door switch and the ignition on. There is no menu or diagnostic scanner involved for the basic re-initialise; the whole job is done from the switch in about twenty seconds per window.
Does the passenger window need doing too?
Only if it has the one-touch express feature and lost it. On cars where the passenger door also has auto up, re-teach it the same way from that door’s switch. Windows that only move while held do not have the feature and do not need re-initialising.
My window rises slowly or drags — will the reset fix that?
The reset only teaches the limit; it will not cure a mechanical drag. On a car of this age, worn or dirty runners and perished seals add friction that can stop the glass short. Clean and lightly lubricate the channels first, then run the relearn so the motor sees the true top.
It still won’t auto-close after several tries — now what?
