Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Citroën Berlingo Mk1 (M49/M59) 1996-2011. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Citroën Berlingo Mk1 (M49/M59, 1996–2011) is a simple job, but on the later electronic versions the Built-in Systems Interface (BSI) should be allowed to “go to sleep” first — about 4 minutes — to avoid stored faults. This guide covers the safe order of work.

Where the Battery Is

The battery is in the engine bay. Lift any cover to reach the two terminal clamps. Fit a like-for-like battery if you are renewing it.

Before You Disconnect

  1. Park on a level surface, apply the parking brake and put the gearbox in neutral.
  2. Check the audio security code is to hand.
  3. Open the bonnet, close all the doors and windows and lock the van with the mechanical key.
  4. Turn the engine off and remove the key.
  5. Wait 4 minutes for the BSI to power down (on later electronic vans) before touching the terminals.

Disconnecting

  1. Slacken the negative (−, earth) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
  2. Only undo the positive (+) terminal if you are removing the battery completely.

Reconnecting

  1. Connect the positive (+) lead first, then the negative (−) earth lead last. Tighten both firmly.
  2. Turn the ignition on and wait a moment before starting.

What to Reset Afterwards

  • Enter the radio code and reset the clock and presets.
  • Check the remote locks and unlocks the van; if not, lock/unlock once with the mechanical key to re-sync.
  • If the electric windows have lost one-touch, hold each switch fully up for a moment to re-teach the closed position.

If a Warning Light Stays On

One or two lights right after reconnecting is normal and should clear on a short drive. If a warning stays on, a fault code may be stored — reading it needs an OBD scanner (on post-2001 vans), and you can look up what a Citroën code means on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need to wait 4 minutes?

On the later electronic Berlingos, yes — it lets the BSI power down cleanly. The earliest, simpler vans are less fussy, but waiting does no harm.

Will I lose my radio?

The unit may ask for its security code after a power loss. Have it ready, or use a memory-saver to avoid it.

Do I need to register a new battery?

No — this generation has no battery coding requirement. Fit the correct battery and enter the radio code.
