The Ford Puma (2020–present) tracks its service interval by oil life rather than a fixed countdown, so when the “Service: Oil change due” message or the spanner appears it’s telling you the algorithm has run the oil down to its limit. Once you’ve actually changed the oil and filter, the Oil life figure has to be reset to 100% from the driver’s display — otherwise the reminder keeps nagging and the next interval is miscalculated. Here’s the menu sequence for both screen sizes.
Reset It Only After the Oil Is Changed
The Puma’s oil-life monitor isn’t a simple timer — it estimates remaining oil life from how the car has been driven. Resetting it without fresh oil tells the car the old oil is brand new, so it’ll happily run past the safe point. Do the oil and filter first, then reset.
Reset on the 12.3-inch Digital Cluster
- Switch the ignition on (you don’t need the engine running).
- Use the steering-wheel arrow controls to scroll the cluster menu.
- Open ‘Settings’ → ‘Vehicle’ → ‘Oil life’.
- Press and hold ‘OK’ until the confirmation message appears and the value returns to 100%.
Reset on the 4.2-inch Cluster
Cars with the smaller 4.2-inch display follow the same path through the cluster menu — scroll to the Vehicle / Oil life option with the wheel buttons and hold OK to confirm. The wording is identical; only the screen is smaller.
If the Message Won’t Clear
- You let go of OK too soon — the hold has to register; repeat and keep it pressed until it confirms.
- It’s a different warning — an amber engine or oil-pressure light isn’t the service timer and won’t clear this way; it needs diagnosing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Puma use oil-life monitoring or a fixed interval?
Oil life — the car estimates remaining life from your driving and prompts when it’s low, so the mileage between resets varies. Always reset to 100% after an oil change.
Can I reset it without changing the oil?
You can, but you shouldn’t — the engine will then run the old oil well past its safe life. Only reset once fresh oil and a new filter are in.
Where is the Oil life option on my Puma?
In the cluster menu under Settings → Vehicle → Oil life, reached with the steering-wheel buttons. Same place on both the 12.3-inch and 4.2-inch displays.
The spanner came back after a few miles — why?
Either the OK hold didn’t confirm, or a separate fault is present. Re-do the reset; if it still returns, have the car scanned.
If a warning light appeared alongside the service message, look up the code on autodtcs.com. After any work on the electrics, see our Puma battery guide — the mild-hybrid models have an extra step worth knowing.
