Home/Honda/CR-V/Mk5 (RW/RT) 2018-2023/Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the Honda CR-V Mk5 (RW/RT) 2018-2023. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on a Honda CR-V Mk5 (RW/RT, 2018–2023) is a straightforward engine-bay job. This guide covers safe disconnection and the items that relearn afterwards. (On the e:HEV hybrid you still only ever touch the 12 V battery — never the orange high-voltage cables.)

Where the Battery Is

The 12 V battery is in the engine compartment, under a cover — on the petrol and the e:HEV hybrid alike. The hybrid’s high-voltage battery is workshop-only.

Disconnecting

  1. Open the driver’s door, switch the ignition off and remove the key (or keep a keyless fob out of range).
  2. Wait 3 minutes after switching off before disconnecting.
  3. Disconnect the negative (−, black) terminal first and lift the lead clear.
  4. If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+, red) next, then the hold-down.

Airbag/pretensioner safety: if you’ll be near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners, allow the system to discharge for the 3 minutes.

Reconnecting & Relearning

  1. Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last; tighten and refit the cover.
  2. Reset the clock and re-enter radio presets.
  3. The engine may idle slightly rough at first — the idle relearns over the first few minutes of driving.
  4. Recalibrate the tyre-pressure (deflation) monitor — see our CR-V Mk5 TPMS guide.

The CR-V doesn’t need the new battery coded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which terminal first on the CR-V?

Always the negative (−) first, and reconnect it last.

Why wait 3 minutes?

Honda wants the control units to power down so nothing is corrupted when the battery comes off.

Is it safe on the e:HEV hybrid?

Yes — the 12 V is isolated from the high-voltage system. Never touch the orange cables.

Does it need the battery registered?

No — relearn idle by driving and recalibrate the deflation monitor; no coding needed.

For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our CR-V Mk5 service reset guide.
