When the remote on a Škoda Karoq (2017–present, VAG MQB platform) only locks the car from a step away, responds on the second or third press, or throws a “Replace key battery” message into the driver display, the culprit is almost always the little 3-volt coin cell inside the key — not the car. The Karoq ships with one of two versions of the same folding flip key: a standard remote that locks, unlocks and pops the boot from its buttons, or the KESSY keyless (Comfort Access) version that also lets you unlock and start the car without pressing anything. Both share the same case, the same fold-out emergency blade and the same battery, so the swap below applies to either — the KESSY key simply drains its cell faster because it is constantly listening for the car. Here is how to tell a flat cell from a real fault, the exact battery to buy, and why a brand-new key is the one job you cannot finish at home.

How to Tell the Fob Battery Is Dying

  • Shrinking range. You have to be almost touching the car for it to lock or unlock, where it used to work from across the car park. This is the classic first sign on the Karoq.
  • A “Replace key battery” message. The Karoq’s driver information display shows an explicit low-key-battery warning when it reads a weak fob — a clear, model-specific prompt that the cell is on its way out.
  • KESSY only recognises the key up close. If keyless entry or push-button start only works when the key is right next to the door handle or start button — or you have to hold the fob against the start button to get going — the proximity signal is weak, which points straight at the battery.
  • Intermittent buttons, worse in the cold. A near-flat lithium cell sags under load and struggles at low temperature, so response becomes hit-and-miss on frosty mornings.

A CR2032 in a Karoq key typically lasts two to four years in the button-only remote. A KESSY keyless key wakes far more often and can need a fresh cell closer to once a year. If yours is older than that and doing any of the above, fit a new battery before suspecting the car’s receiver or immobiliser.

The Battery You Need

Both versions of the Karoq key use a single CR2032 — a 3-volt lithium coin cell, 20 mm across and 3.2 mm thick, sold in every supermarket, hardware shop and petrol station. Do not substitute the slimmer CR2025 (2.5 mm): it is the same diameter but thinner, so it can sit loosely on the contacts and give poor range, and it may let the case rattle. Buy a good-quality branded cell — cheap coin cells sag under the brief high current the transmitter draws and can read as flat almost from new. If you are ever unsure, the code is stamped on the flat face of the cell you take out; match it exactly.

Method — Standard Remote and KESSY Keyless Key

The procedure is the same for both Karoq keys, because they use the same housing. Work over a table so a dropped cell or clip does not roll away.

  1. Release the emergency blade. Slide the small catch on the top of the key and pull the metal emergency blade straight out. It comes fully free and doubles as a handy prying tool for the next step.
  2. Split the case at the seam. With the blade removed you will see the parting line around the key and the slot the blade left behind. Insert a thin flat tool — a plastic trim tool, a small flat-blade screwdriver, or the emergency blade itself — into the seam near the blade opening and twist gently to pop the clip-held rear cover off. Work near the hinge end rather than levering at the centre, and use steady pressure, not force: the retaining clips are tight and can crack if you rush them.
  3. Note the orientation, then lift the cell out. Look at which way up the old CR2032 sits before you disturb it — in the Karoq holder the positive (+) face normally points up, toward the back cover you just removed, but always trust the key in your hand over any generic instruction.
  4. Fit the new cell the same way round. Drop the fresh CR2032 in so it matches the orientation you just noted, and press it fully under its retaining clip so it sits flat on the contacts. Handle it by the edges — finger grease on the faces can cause poor contact.
  5. Clip the case back together. Line up the two halves and press around the seam until every clip clicks home with no gap. Then slide the emergency blade back into the top until it latches.

⚠️ Get the polarity right. A coin cell fitted upside down will not power the key and can slowly discharge against the contacts, so the fob stays dead even with a “new” battery in it. The safe habit is simple: copy the exact orientation of the cell you removed before you ever pull it out.

Confirm It Worked

Stand back a few metres and lock, then unlock, the Karoq — full range should return straight away. On a KESSY car, walk up and test that keyless entry and push-button start respond normally again. The “Replace key battery” message usually clears the next time the car reads a healthy key; if it lingers, it often needs one full lock-drive-unlock cycle before it resets rather than clearing the instant you swap the cell.

If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Fix It

  • Re-check polarity and seating. An upside-down or loosely seated cell is the most common reason a “new” battery changes nothing. Make sure it is the right way up and clipped down firmly.
  • Confirm it is a CR2032, not a CR2025. The thinner cell can lose contact as the case flexes. If range is still poor, check the code on the cell you fitted.
  • Wipe the contacts. A dry cloth over the spring terminals removes grease or light corrosion that can throttle the signal.
  • Use the backup start. If a KESSY key still will not start the car, hold the key flat against the marked spot on the steering column or start button and press — the car reads the transponder directly, which both gets you going and confirms the issue is the radio side, i.e. the battery.
  • Rule out the car’s 12 V battery. A weak vehicle battery can make the whole system slow to wake and mimic key faults; if the Karoq itself is sluggish to respond, look there too.

New Key or Spare — Why It’s a Dealer Job

Changing the coin cell leaves the key’s coding untouched, so the fob keeps working immediately — no reprogramming needed. Adding a spare or replacing a lost key is a different matter. The Karoq’s immobiliser has to be accessed with VAG diagnostic equipment, and blank keys are ordered against the car’s VIN and coded to it before they will start the engine. That makes a new or extra key a job for a Škoda dealer or an auto-locksmith, not a driveway task. The practical takeaway: keep the battery in your spare key fresh too, so you are never down to a single working key waiting on a dealer appointment.
