Changing the blades or freeing them from ice on a Skoda Karoq (NU, 2017–present) means first lifting the wiper arms into their service position. Park them normally and they sit under the bonnet lip out of reach — here’s the proper way up.
The service position — you’ll also see it called the maintenance or winter position — is a mode that lifts both wiper arms up to vertical and holds them there so you can get at the blades. Two jobs bring most owners here: renewing tired blades that smear or judder, and standing the arms clear of the glass before a frosty night so the rubber doesn’t freeze to the screen and tear when the motor next runs. It’s also handy for clearing the leaves and grit that collect in the scuttle at the foot of the windscreen. Raising the arms this way is completely normal on the Karoq, not a sign of anything wrong, and it’s triggered by a quick flick of the wiper stalk in the moments after you switch off.
Why the Service Position Exists
The Karoq parks its wipers low, tucked below the rear edge of the bonnet where the trim overlaps the base of the screen. That keeps them out of your line of sight and shelters the blades, but it also means the blade ends are hidden under the bonnet lip when the car is off. You can’t simply hinge an arm up from there — the tip is trapped, and forcing it strains the wiper linkage and can crack the trim or chip paint. The service position gets round this by sweeping the arms up into the clear middle of the glass first, then stopping, so each one lifts freely away from the screen.
Before You Begin
- Check the bonnet is shut and latched — the mode won’t arm with it open, and raised arms can foul an open bonnet.
- Get the ignition sequence ready: on, then off, with the stalk flick following immediately.
- Free any frozen blades from the glass before you start, or the motor may stall as it tries to sweep them up.
- Have the replacement blades and the fitting sorted first, so an arm isn’t left standing under tension.
- Do one arm at a time, keeping a hand on it — an arm that springs back onto bare glass can crack the screen.
Raising the Wipers
- Check the bonnet is shut — the mode won’t arm otherwise.
- Turn the ignition on, then off.
- Within a few seconds, flick the wiper stalk down (single-wipe) briefly.
- The arms sweep up and hold vertical.
- Pull them off the glass to change blades or clear snow.
Some Karoqs also list a wiper service position in the infotainment menu.
Putting Them Back
Once you’re done, lay both arms gently back down onto the glass — never drive off with them standing up. Then switch the ignition on and run the wipers once; they sweep and settle back into their normal parked spot beneath the bonnet lip. A quick screen wash afterwards lets you confirm new blades wipe cleanly with no streaks.
Won’t Lift?
- Too slow — the stalk only responds for a few seconds after ignition-off; run the on-off-flick sequence again more promptly.
- Wrong order — the flick must follow the on-then-off; flicking the stalk with the car already cold may do nothing.
- Bonnet ajar — latch it fully; the interlock blocks the mode while it’s open.
- Blades frozen down — free them first so the motor doesn’t stall.
- Try the menu — if your car has the infotainment option, use it as a fallback.
Changing the Blades
With the arm held vertical, support it with one hand so it can’t snap back while you work. Karoq blades typically use a common clip or hook fixing: release the catch, slide the old blade off the arm’s hook, and press the new one on until it clicks home. Make sure it’s seated square before moving on. Then lower the arm back to the glass by hand instead of letting it drop — released from vertical, an arm carries enough force to chip or crack the screen.
