If the remote on your Škoda Kamiq (2019–present, VW-group MQB A0 platform) only locks the car from an arm’s length, flashes weakly, or has stopped responding altogether, the coin cell inside the fob is almost certainly flat. The Kamiq uses a single folding “flip” remote — the same switchblade-style key shared with the Škoda Scala and Fabia, the VW Polo and the SEAT Ibiza — and cars fitted with the optional KESSY keyless-entry system carry the very same key body, just with proximity locking and push-button start added. Whichever version you have, the battery, the way the case opens and the fix are identical. Here is exactly what to buy, how to open the key without cracking the housing, and why a genuinely new key is the one job you can’t finish on the driveway.

How to Tell the Fob Battery Is Dying
- Shrinking range. You have to stand right next to the Kamiq — or hold the key against the door handle — before it locks or unlocks. This fading range is the classic first warning.
- The button LED goes dim or dark. Press lock and watch the little indicator light on the fob: once it barely glows or fails to light at all, the cell is on its way out.
- A “key battery low” message. On KESSY-equipped cars the driver-information display shows a low key-battery warning when the fob is read with a weak cell — a clear prompt to change it.
- KESSY stops working before the buttons do. Keyless proximity locking and push-button start draw more power than a simple button press, so on keyless cars the “walk up and it unlocks” feature usually dies first while the buttons still just about work.

The Battery You Need
The Kamiq fob takes one CR2032 — a 3-volt lithium coin cell, 20 mm across and 3.2 mm thick. It is the most common key battery there is, sold in any supermarket, hardware shop or petrol station, and Škoda’s own service part (a 3.0 V micro battery) is simply this cell. Buy a good-quality branded one; cheap cells sag under the brief high current the transmitter draws and can give short range even when “new”. There is no difference in battery between a standard-remote Kamiq and a KESSY car — both use the single CR2032.

How to Open the Kamiq Flip Key and Change the Battery
- Release the emergency blade. Slide the small catch at the top of the fob and let the folding metal key blade spring out, or pull it out fully — the slot it leaves behind is your way into the case.
- Split the two halves. Insert a thin plastic pry tool (a guitar pick or an old bank card works well) into the seam where the blade sits and gently twist. The rear half of the housing unclips from the front. Avoid a metal screwdriver where you can — it scratches the case and can crack the plastic clips. There is no screw on this key; it is entirely clip-held.
- Note the orientation, then lift the cell out. Look carefully at which face of the CR2032 is showing before you disturb it. In this VAG flip key the cell normally sits with its positive (+) face upward, toward the cover you just removed, held by a small metal clip.
- Fit the new cell the same way round. Handle it only by the edges — finger grease on the flat faces harms the contact — and slide it under the clip with the + side facing the way the old one did.
- Clip the case shut and refit the blade. Press the two halves together until they snap all the way round, then push the metal blade back in until it latches. Test lock and unlock from a few paces.
⚠️ Match the orientation you found. Fitting the coin cell upside down is the single most common mistake — a reversed cell won’t power the transmitter and can slowly discharge against the clip. If you didn’t note which way the old one sat, remember the general rule for this key: positive (+) toward the removable cover.
Check It Worked
Stand back a few metres and lock, then unlock, the car; full range should return straight away and the LED should flash brightly again. On a KESSY Kamiq, walk-up unlocking should behave normally once more, and any “key battery low” message clears the next time the car reads a healthy fob — sometimes after one drive cycle rather than instantly.
If a Fresh Cell Doesn’t Fix It
- Re-check polarity and seating. Pop the case back open and confirm the + face is the right way up and the cell is fully home under its clip against clean contacts — this catches the great majority of “new battery, still dead” cases.
- Wipe the contacts. A smear of finger grease or light corrosion on the terminals is enough to cause dropouts; clean them with a dry cloth or a cotton bud.

New Key or Spare — Why It’s a Dealer Job
Swapping the coin cell keeps the fob’s existing coding, so nothing needs reprogramming and the key works the moment you close the case. Cutting and coding a new key is a different story: the Kamiq’s immobiliser has to be accessed with VAG diagnostic equipment, and a blank flip key must be ordered against the car’s VIN and then matched to the immobiliser before it will start the engine. That makes adding a spare or replacing a lost key a job for a Škoda dealer or an auto-locksmith with the right kit — so keep the battery in your spare key fresh too, and you’re never down to a single working key.
