Home/BMW/X3/Mk3 (G01) 2017-Present/Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

Disconnect and Reconnect the Battery

These instructions apply to the BMW X3 Mk3 (G01) 2017-Present. For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 12, 2026

The BMW X3 (G01, 2017–present) keeps its main 12 V battery in the boot, not under the bonnet — a surprise to many owners. Here’s where it is and how to disconnect it safely.

Where the Battery Is

The main 12 V battery sits in the boot, under the luggage floor — lift the floor panel to reach it. There is a remote jump-start positive terminal under the bonnet for jump-starting. Mild-hybrid (48V) X3s also have a small support battery near the engine cowl — leave that one alone; this guide is for the main 12 V battery.

Disconnecting

  1. Switch the ignition off, take the key away and wait a minute.
  2. Lift the boot floor panel to expose the battery.
  3. Disconnect the negative (−) terminal first and tuck the lead aside.
  4. If removing the battery, disconnect the positive (+) next, then the clamp and vent hose.

Reconnecting & After

  1. Reconnect positive (+) first, then negative (−) last; refit the floor panel.
  2. Reset the clock — CBS needs it correct.
  3. Re-initialise the windows and, if fitted, the sunroof — see our X3 window guide.
  4. A new battery should be registered to the car with a diagnostic tool so the charging system matches it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on a BMW X3 G01?

In the boot, under the luggage floor — not in the engine bay.

Can I jump-start it under the bonnet?

Yes — use the marked jump-start positive terminal under the bonnet and an earth point.

Does a new X3 battery need coding?

Yes — a new battery should be registered with a tool; a quick disconnect/reconnect of the same battery doesn’t.

Why disconnect negative first?

It removes the earth path so a tool touching bodywork can’t short the battery.

For any warning light that stays on, look up the code on autodtcs.com. To clear the service reminder, see our X3 G01 service reset.
