Set the Wiper Service Position

Changing the blades or freeing them from ice on a Skoda Scala (NW1, 2019–present) means first lifting the wiper arms into their service position. Park them normally and they sit under the bonnet lip out of reach — here’s the proper way up.

The service position — you may also hear it called the maintenance or winter position — lifts both front wiper arms clear of the windscreen so you can work behind them. On the Scala you use it in two everyday situations: renewing the blades once they start to smear or judder, and standing the arms up in frosty weather so they do not freeze flat to the glass overnight and tear the rubber the first time you switch them on. It is a designed-in feature, not a fault, and the arms will only rise when you trigger the mode correctly.

Why the Service Position Exists

The Scala parks its wipers low, tucked under the lip of the bonnet trim where they sit out of the airflow and out of sight. That low park point is exactly why you cannot just grab an arm and lift it — the blade catches on the bonnet edge, and levering it up strains the wiper linkage and can crack the plastic scuttle trim. The service position gets around that by first sweeping the arms up to a clear rest point where nothing is in the way, so you can then fold them off the glass safely.

Before You Start

• Make sure the bonnet is fully closed — the mode will not arm with it open.
• Set the ignition as the steps describe; the timing after switch-off matters.
• If the blades are frozen to the screen, ease them free first — lifting against ice can stall the motor.
• Have the replacement blades unpacked and ready so the arms are not left standing longer than needed.
• Work one arm at a time, keeping a hand on any arm that could spring back onto the glass.

Raising the Wipers

Won’t Lift?

• Too slow — the stalk only works for a few seconds after ignition-off; run the sequence again more promptly.
• Wrong ignition state — you need the on-then-off sequence, not the engine running.
• Bonnet ajar — latch it fully; a bonnet that is not quite shut blocks the mode.
• Blades frozen down — free them from the ice first, then retry.
• Wipers weren’t parked — let them return to their normal rest point before you begin.

Changing the Blades

With the arms held clear, support the arm with one hand so it cannot spring back — a bare metal arm dropping onto the glass can crack the screen. Most Scala blades use a common clip or hook fitting: release the catch, slide the old blade off, and click the new one on until it locks home. Fit the fresh blade, then lower the arm gently by hand rather than letting it snap down, and do both sides before sending the wipers back to park.
