A DSG-equipped Skoda Scala (NW1, 2019–present) stuck in P — usually a flat battery or shift-interlock fault — has an emergency release by the gear lever so you can move it. Everything happens in the cabin; no high-voltage or under-car work. This override is a designed-in feature on the automatic Scala, there so a dead 12 V battery can never leave the car mechanically trapped in Park. It takes only a couple of minutes and the sole tool you need is a slim flat-bladed screwdriver.
Why the DSG Locks in Park
The selector is held in P by an electric shift interlock. In everyday use it only releases when the ignition is on and your foot is on the brake, which stops the car being knocked out of Park by mistake. Because that lock is powered, a flat battery or a faulty interlock leaves it with nothing to energise the release, so the lever stays pinned in P. The emergency override is a mechanical way past the interlock so the car can be rolled and recovered without any power at the gearbox.
Before You Begin
- Pull the handbrake or chock a wheel before you begin — once released, the car can roll.
- Choose level ground wherever possible and never do this pointing down a slope.
- Have someone ready on the brake in the driver’s seat if there is any gradient.
- Plan where the car will go — clear of an obstruction or onto a transporter — before you free it.
- Have a slim flat-bladed screwdriver ready; that is the only tool required.
Releasing the Lever from P
- Depress the brake pedal (or set the parking brake).
- Unclip the trim cover around the gear lever.
- At the marked point, press the release tab with a slim flat screwdriver.
- Move the gear lever out of ‘P’, then remove the screwdriver.
- Refit the cover.
Treat this as an emergency move to get the car mobile, not a fix — it is worth having the interlock checked afterwards.
If It Won’t Release
- Keep the brake pressed or the parking brake set while you work the release.
- Make sure the screwdriver is on the marked tab, not the surrounding trim, and pressing squarely.
- Check the cover is fully unclipped so the release tab is exposed and can travel.
- If the battery is flat, a jump pack or boost often restores the normal interlock, so the override may not be needed.
- If it still won’t move with a healthy battery, stop and have the interlock inspected rather than forcing the lever.
Afterwards
This just lets you reposition the car — off a driveway or onto a transporter. If a flat battery caused it, deal with the battery; once it is charged the interlock should work normally again and there is nothing further to reset. If the lever sticks with a good battery, treat it as a fault and get the interlock checked before relying on the car.

Safe to DIY?

Why did it lock in P?
Typically a flat 12 V battery, which leaves the interlock with no power to release, or less often a fault in the interlock itself. The override gets you moving until that underlying cause is sorted.
Do I need a special tool?
No — a slim flat-bladed screwdriver presses the release tab, and the same tool usually unclips the trim cover. There is no dealer-only tool involved in the emergency release.
Will the gearbox be fine once the battery is charged?
If a flat battery was the only cause, yes — recharge or replace it and the DSG will select drive and Park normally again. If the lock happened with a healthy battery, have the interlock diagnosed before you rely on it.
Can I damage the trim doing this?
Not if you unclip it gently at the edges rather than levering hard in one spot. The cover is designed to come off for exactly this job, so patience with the clips is all it takes.
