Fitting a new battery, tracking down an electrical fault, storing the car for a while or recovering from a flat? Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Cupra Leon (KL, 2020–present) is a job most owners can manage with a single spanner. The Leon range is mostly petrol and diesel, but it also includes an e-Hybrid plug-in version — on that model you still only work on the ordinary 12 V battery, and you must never touch the orange high-voltage cabling or the traction battery. The 12 V side is owner-safe across the range; the high-voltage system is strictly off-limits. Follow the correct order and the car relearns its settings cleanly.

Where the 12 V Battery Is
Open the bonnet and the 12 V battery sits in the engine bay, typically under a plastic cover toward one side of the compartment. Unclip the cover to reach the terminals. The negative post is marked with a minus (−) and wears a black lead; the positive post is marked with a plus (+) beneath a coloured cap. On the e-Hybrid this remains your working battery — the high-voltage pack is sealed and separate. Confirm both 12 V posts before picking up a spanner.
Before You Start
- Switch the ignition fully off, and on the e-Hybrid make sure the car is not in READY; take the key well away.
- Turn off the lights, wipers, climate fan and accessories, and close the boot and doors.
- Note the radio or infotainment security code if the car uses one, ready to re-enter later.
- Wait a couple of minutes for the modules to power down before breaking the circuit.
- Have a 10 mm spanner ready, wear gloves and eye protection, and never bridge the positive post to bodywork with a tool.
Disconnecting
- Confirm everything is off, the key is away, and you have waited a minute or two.
- Lift the cover and slacken the negative (−, black) terminal first. Ease the clamp off the post and move the lead aside so it cannot spring back.
- Only if you are removing the battery, cover the positive post, then slacken and lift off the positive (+, red) clamp.
- Undo the hold-down bracket if the battery must come out; otherwise having the negative clear is enough to isolate the car for most electrical work.
Reconnecting
- Fit the positive (+) first, seat the clamp fully on the post and tighten it.
- Fit the negative (−) last and tighten firmly. Both clamps must be solid — a loose earth is behind most of the strange faults owners report afterwards.
- Refit the cover and hold-down, switch the ignition on, wait a few seconds, then start.
What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards
Removing power clears a few short-term memories. On the Leon the usual list is:
- Clock and radio — reset the time, key in the audio code if prompted, and re-store your presets.
- One-touch and anti-pinch windows — usually need re-teaching; see our guide to initialise the Cupra Leon power windows.
- Tyre-pressure monitoring — re-store the baseline using our Cupra Leon TPMS reset once the tyres are set correctly.
- Start-stop / battery management — a like-for-like battery simply relearns; a different battery type may need a management reset to charge properly.
- Comfort settings and drive modes — some preferences revert to default, and a warning light can show until the car has driven a short distance.
If a Warning Light Stays On or the Car Feels Off
- Check both clamps are tight and fully seated — re-do the negative earth if unsure.
- Take a short, steady drive; many adaptations and lights clear once the modules have relearned.
- Re-run the window and, if a light lingers, the steering-angle relearn.
- Rule out a genuinely flat or worn 12 V battery — a proper charge or renewal may be the real fix.
- If a light refuses to clear, read the stored fault code before changing parts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the 12 V battery on a Cupra Leon?
In the engine bay under the bonnet, usually beneath a plastic cover to one side. It is a standard 12 V battery. On the e-Hybrid the high-voltage pack is separate and sealed — you only ever work on the 12 V battery.
Which terminal comes off first?
Negative (−, black) off first when disconnecting; positive (+) on first and negative last when reconnecting. This keeps a spanner from shorting the live post to the bodywork.
What resets when I disconnect it?
Usually the clock and radio presets (and possibly the audio code), the one-touch windows and the tyre-pressure baseline. A few comfort settings revert to default and settle after a short drive.
Does a new battery need coding?
A like-for-like 12 V battery needs no coding for normal running. If you fit a different type or size, the start-stop battery-management system may want a reset so it charges the new battery correctly.
Is it safe to do on the e-Hybrid?
Yes — the 12 V battery is owner-serviceable on every Leon. Stay well clear of the orange high-voltage cabling and the traction battery; that side is not DIY and belongs to a qualified technician.
Can I jump-start it instead?
If the 12 V battery is just flat, a jump-start or charge is often all that is needed and keeps your settings. Disconnecting is for renewal, storage or electrical work. If a warning light stays on afterwards, check the code on autodtcs.com.
