Fitting a fresh battery, chasing an electrical fault, laying the car up over winter or bouncing back from a flat? Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Cupra Ateca (KH, 2020–present) is a job most owners can do at home with a single spanner. The Cupra Ateca is a conventional petrol SUV with no high-voltage system, so there is nothing hazardous to work around — just the one 12 V battery under the bonnet. Work in the right order, give the electronics a moment to settle, and the car relearns its settings cleanly afterwards.

Where the 12 V Battery Is

Open the bonnet and you will find the 12 V battery in the engine bay, normally under a plastic cover toward one side of the compartment. Lift or unclip the cover to expose the terminals. The negative post is marked with a minus (−) and usually wears a black lead; the positive post is marked with a plus (+) and sits under a coloured flip-up cap. Take a moment to confirm which is which before touching a spanner to anything — getting the order right is what keeps the job safe.

Getting Ready

  • Switch the ignition fully off, take the key away from the car, and make sure the lights, wipers, climate fan and boot are all off and closed.
  • Note your radio or infotainment security code if the car uses one, so you can key it back in later.
  • Wait a couple of minutes after switching off so the control modules power down before you break the circuit.
  • Have the right spanner ready (the clamp nuts are usually 10 mm), and wear gloves and eye protection.
  • A memory-saver plugged into the 12 V socket can preserve the clock and presets if you are lifting the battery out — optional, but handy.

Disconnecting

  1. Confirm everything is switched off, the key is away, and you have waited a minute or two.
  2. Lift the cover and slacken the nut on the negative (−, black) terminal first. Ease the clamp off the post and tuck the lead aside so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
  3. Only if you are lifting the battery out, cover the exposed positive post, then slacken and remove the positive (+, red) clamp.
  4. Release the hold-down bracket if the battery has to come out; for most electrical work, the negative being clear is enough to isolate the car.

Reconnecting

  1. Fit the positive (+) first, seat the clamp fully on the post and tighten it.
  2. Fit the negative (−) last and tighten it firmly. Both clamps should be solid with no wobble — a loose earth is the most common cause of odd faults afterwards.
  3. Refit any cover and hold-down, switch the ignition on, wait a few seconds, and start the engine.

What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards

Cutting power wipes a few short-term memories. On the Cupra Ateca the usual list is:

  • Clock and radio — reset the time and, if prompted, key in the audio security code and re-store your presets.
  • One-touch and anti-pinch windows — these often need re-teaching; see our guide to initialise the Cupra Ateca power windows.
  • Tyre-pressure monitoring — the system usually needs its baseline re-stored; follow our Cupra Ateca TPMS reset steps once the tyres are at the correct pressures.
  • Start-stop / battery management — on a like-for-like battery the car simply relearns; a different battery type may take a few drive cycles to settle, or want a battery-management reset.
  • Comfort settings and drive modes — some preferences may revert to default, and a warning light or two can appear until the car has driven a short distance.

If a Warning Light Stays On or the Car Feels Off

  • Check both clamps are properly tight and fully seated — re-do the negative earth if in doubt.
  • Take the car for a short, steady drive; many lights and adaptations clear themselves once the modules have relearned.
  • Re-run the window and, if fitted, the steering-angle relearn if a light lingers after driving.
  • If the battery was deeply flat or is simply old, a good charge or renewal may be what the car is actually asking for.
  • For any light that will not clear, read the stored fault code before guessing at parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on a Cupra Ateca?

It is in the engine bay, under the bonnet, usually beneath a plastic cover to one side. It is a single, standard 12 V battery — there is no separate high-voltage battery on the Cupra Ateca.

Which terminal do I take off first?

Always the negative (−, black) terminal first when disconnecting. When reconnecting, reverse it: positive (+) on first, negative last. This order avoids accidental shorts against the bodywork.

What resets when I disconnect the battery?

Expect to reset the clock and radio presets (and possibly key in the audio code), re-teach the one-touch windows, and re-store the tyre-pressure baseline. Some comfort settings revert to default and clear after a short drive.

Does a new battery need coding on the Cupra Ateca?

For a like-for-like replacement, no coding is needed for normal running. If you change to a different battery type or size, the start-stop battery-management system may want a reset so it charges the new battery correctly.

Will disconnecting the battery clear fault codes or the service light?

It can clear some temporary, self-cleared codes, but it is not a proper reset and it will not turn off the service reminder. A permanent fault will simply return; use the correct procedure for the service indicator and read any code that comes back.

Can I jump-start it instead of disconnecting?

Yes — if the battery is just flat, a jump-start or a proper charge is often all you need and avoids losing your settings. Disconnecting is for renewal, storage or electrical work, not simply for a flat battery. If a warning light stays on afterwards, check the code on autodtcs.com.
