After an oil-and-filter change the service / spanner message on your Cupra Ateca (KH, 2020–present) stays lit until you clear it. On most cars you can do it from the driver’s seat using the cluster buttons — no dealer tool needed.

The wrench (spanner) symbol, or a ‘Service now’ / ‘Inspection’ message in the Cupra’s Digital Cockpit, is a maintenance reminder — not a fault. It means the car has counted down to the next scheduled service. The Ateca will drive normally with it showing, but the message keeps appearing at every start-up until it is cleared, and the countdown to the following service only stays accurate if you reset it once the work is done.
What the Service Light Means on the Ateca
The Cupra Ateca uses the same VW Group service-reminder logic found across the range, and it can run on one of two schedules. A fixed (time/distance) schedule calls the service up at a set interval no matter how the car is used. A flexible / variable (“LongLife”) schedule reads oil quality and level, fuel used, mileage, time and driving style to decide when the oil really needs changing, so the gap between services can lengthen or shorten. When the counter hits zero you get the spanner and a distance/time figure that has run down. Resetting tells the cluster the service is complete so it can load the next interval.
Don’t assume a mileage figure — a hard-driven VZ on a variable schedule can reach its service sooner than you’d expect. Check the service section of your owner’s handbook or your service record for the interval that applies to your car.
Before You Begin
Only reset once the service is genuinely done — the reminder is what tracks the next oil change. Set the car up first:
- Do the work first. Clearing the reminder before the oil is actually changed just hides the true due point.
- Park safely on level ground, parking brake set, selector in P or neutral.
- Ignition on, engine off. The dashboard needs to be awake but the engine must not be running — on the keyless Ateca, press start without touching the brake.
- No tools required. The whole reset is done with the cluster and stalk buttons.
Resetting from the Cluster
- Switch the ignition off.
- Press and hold the ‘0.0’ / trip-reset button on the instrument cluster (or wiper-stalk end).
- Switch the ignition on while still holding — the service / wrench message appears.
- Release the button, then briefly press the menu/OK button to confirm the reset.
- Switch the ignition off to store it.
On Atecas with the full Digital Cockpit you can instead use Car / Vehicle menu → Service on the screen. A few cars (or certain markets) require a workshop diagnostic tool — if the cluster routine won’t take, that’s why.

If It Stays Lit
If the reminder is still there, run through this list before assuming a fault:
- Hold the button before switching on — the service prompt only appears if the trip-reset button is already held as the ignition comes on.
- Engine running? Do it ignition-on only; if the engine starts, switch off and begin again.
- Confirm the reset. The item isn’t cleared until you give the brief menu/OK press — don’t stop a step short.
- Cycle and retry. Switch the ignition fully off, pause a few seconds, then repeat the whole sequence.
- Right menu. In the Digital Cockpit make sure you’re in the Service section, not the trip or driving-data view.
- If it still won’t take, the car may be a variant/market that needs a workshop diagnostic tool.
After the Reset
When the reset takes, the spanner / ‘Service now’ message disappears straight away and won’t return at the next start-up. Opening the Service screen should show a fresh distance and/or time figure counting toward the next service instead of a zero or overdue reading. The reset only clears the service reminder — it doesn’t affect any genuine warning light and doesn’t change the car’s mechanical condition.
How Often You’ll Need This
Reset the reminder after every oil-and-filter service, once, at the end of the job. The gap between services depends on whether your Ateca is on the fixed or flexible schedule and how it’s driven, so use the interval in your owner’s handbook or on your service sticker rather than a fixed number. Track days, spirited driving and lots of short cold-start trips all shorten a variable interval. Never reset the counter between services just to silence the message — that only removes your advance warning.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset the service light on a Cupra Ateca?
Ignition off, hold the 0.0/trip-reset button, switch ignition on until the service message shows, release, then press the menu/OK button to confirm.
Do I need a dealer tool?
Usually no — the cluster routine works. Some cars/markets do need a diagnostic tool if the manual reset won’t complete.
Why won’t it reset?
You must be holding the reset button as you switch the ignition on, with the engine off. If it still won’t take, cycle the ignition fully off and repeat the sequence.
Does this clear a warning light?
No — only the service reminder, not a fault light. A separate warning symbol means something needs checking, not resetting.
Is the Cupra Ateca reset the same as the SEAT Ateca?
The cluster reset routine is the same across the Ateca family because they share the VW Group service system. Trim and cockpit differences aside, the ignition-off, hold-trip, ignition-on, confirm sequence applies to both.
The message came back the next day — what went wrong?
The reset almost certainly didn’t confirm. Make sure the trip button was held as the ignition came on, that you gave the brief menu/OK press, and that the engine wasn’t running, then repeat the sequence.
If a warning symbol (not the service spanner) is lit, look the code up on autodtcs.com. Changing the battery too? See our Ateca battery guide.
