These instructions apply to the MG ZS Mk1 (ZS11) 2017-2021.

Renewing a flat battery or disconnecting for other work on your MG ZS (2017–2021)? The 12 V battery is in the engine bay. Whether you’re fitting a fresh battery, carrying out bodywork or electrical repairs, storing the car over winter, or recovering after a jump-start, isolating the battery is a job most owners can do on the driveway. Done in the right order, the ZS powers down cleanly and relearns its everyday settings without drama. This guide covers the petrol ZS Mk1 (ZS11); the separate battery-electric ZS EV is a different animal and is not covered here.

Where the 12 V Battery Is

Open the bonnet and you’ll find the 12 V battery in the engine compartment, usually sitting under a plastic cover that either lifts off or unclips. Clear away the cover and you’ll see the two terminals: the negative (−) post wears a black lead and is the chassis earth, while the positive (+) post is under a red flip-up cap. Take a moment to identify both before you reach for a spanner — getting them the right way round is the whole game. The petrol ZS is a conventional car with no high-voltage traction system, so there is nothing hazardous to avoid here; this is ordinary 12 V work.

First, a Few Checks

  • Switch the ignition fully off, take the key well away from the car, and make sure the doors won’t wake the electronics mid-job.
  • Turn off the lights, climate fan, radio and any accessories so nothing is drawing current when you break the connection.
  • If your stereo uses a security code, dig out the code (or your handbook) now so you can re-enter it afterwards.
  • Wait a couple of minutes after switching off so the modules go to sleep before you disturb the terminals.
  • Have the correct spanner ready — usually a 10 mm — plus gloves and eye protection, and remove any metal watch or bracelet.

This is a common job.

Disconnecting

  1. With everything switched off, the key away and a couple of minutes elapsed, lift off the battery cover.
  2. Slacken the negative (−, black) terminal first, then lift the clamp clear of the post and tuck the lead aside so it can’t spring back onto the terminal.
  3. Only if you’re removing the battery, flip up the red cap and release the positive (+, red) clamp. For a straightforward isolation, taking off the negative alone is enough.

Reconnecting

  1. Fit the positive (+) clamp first and seat it fully on the post, then refit the negative (−) clamp.
  2. Tighten both firmly by hand — snug, not overtightened — and refit the red cap and the cover.
  3. Switch the ignition on, give the dash a few seconds to wake and run its checks, then start the engine.

What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards

Cutting the power wipes a few short-term memories that the ZS rebuilds either automatically or with a quick nudge:

  • Clock and radio — reset the time and your station presets, and re-enter the audio security code if the car asks for one.
  • Tyre pressures — re-store the TPMS baseline once the tyres are at their correct cold pressures.
  • Service reminder — if the maintenance light needs clearing after the job, see our ZS service reset guide.
  • Comfort settings — one-touch window behaviour and driver preferences may need a moment to re-learn during normal use.
  • Any warning lamps that flicker on straight after reconnection usually self-clear once the car has been driven a short distance.

If a Warning Light Stays On or the Car Feels Off

  • Check both clamps are properly seated and tight — a loose earth is the most common cause of odd electrical behaviour.
  • Give the car a short drive so the engine and transmission adaptations can re-learn.
  • Re-do the window one-touch relearn if the auto up/down has stopped working.
  • If the battery kept going flat, rule out a genuinely tired or failing battery rather than blaming the disconnect.
  • If a light stubbornly stays on, read the stored fault code to see what the car is actually flagging.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on an MG ZS?

In the engine bay, usually under a plastic cover that lifts or unclips. It’s a standard 12 V battery with the negative terminal on a black lead and the positive under a red cap. The petrol ZS has no high-voltage system, so it’s ordinary owner-serviceable work.

Which terminal comes off first?

Always take the negative (−, black) terminal off first when disconnecting. When reconnecting, do the reverse: fit the positive (+, red) first and the negative last. This order keeps you from accidentally shorting a spanner to earth while the battery is still live.

What resets when I disconnect the battery?

The clock, radio presets and any stored audio code drop out, and the tyre-pressure baseline usually needs re-storing. One-touch window and driver comfort settings may re-learn over the next few drives. Nothing permanent is lost — it’s all quickly re-set.

Do I need to code a new battery on an MG ZS?

For a like-for-like replacement on this petrol ZS, no special coding is needed for normal running — fit the same type and size and the car carries on as before. Just re-do the clock, presets and tyre pressures once it’s reconnected.

Will disconnecting the battery clear fault codes or the service light?

It can clear some temporary trouble codes and pending warnings, but it doesn’t fix the underlying fault — if the problem is still present the light returns. The service reminder is a separate counter; use our ZS service reset guide to clear that properly.

Can I jump-start the ZS instead of disconnecting?

Yes — if the battery is simply flat and you only want to get going, a jump-start avoids removing anything. Disconnecting is for battery renewal, electrical work or long storage. If the battery keeps going flat, though, it’s worth testing it properly.

Reconnected and still chasing a stubborn warning lamp? Read the stored code on autodtcs.com to see exactly what the car is reporting.
