Home/Ford/Fiesta/Mk7 (2008-2017)/Reinitialise the Electric Windows

Reinitialise the Electric Windows

These instructions apply to the Ford Fiesta Mk7 (2008-2017). For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

Last updated: June 6, 2026

After the battery has been disconnected or gone flat on a Ford Fiesta Mk7 (2008–2017), the one-touch (automatic) function on the electric windows often stops working — the window will only move while you hold the switch, and won’t run fully up or down on a single press. Re-initialising the windows restores it in under a minute per door. Here’s the procedure.

When You Need This

The window motors learn their fully-open and fully-closed positions, and that memory is lost whenever the 12 V battery is disconnected or runs flat. Symptoms are a window that won’t auto-close, won’t auto-open, or where the anti-trap function behaves oddly. The fix is a simple relearn from the driver’s switch — no tools needed.

Re-initialising the Windows

  1. Start the engine (or switch the ignition fully on).
  2. Close the driver’s window: press and hold the window close switch until the window is fully shut, then keep holding for a moment and release.
  3. Press and hold the close switch again, wait about 1 second, then release.
  4. Repeat that hold-and-release three times with the window already closed.
  5. Open the window: briefly press and hold the switch to run it down, then check that one-touch up and down now work.
  6. Repeat the whole procedure for the passenger’s window, then switch the engine off.

If the first attempt doesn’t take, simply run through it again — it sometimes needs a second pass.

If It Still Won’t Auto-Close

  • Make sure you held the switch past the point the window stopped — the motor needs to feel the end stop to learn it.
  • Check the window runs smoothly — a sticky or iced channel can prevent the relearn from completing.
  • Persistent fault after a relearn? A window-module or switch issue can store a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my Fiesta windows stop auto-closing?

The one-touch memory is wiped when the battery is disconnected or goes flat — the relearn above restores it.

Do I need any tools?

No — it’s done entirely from the window switch with the ignition on.

How many times do I repeat the hold?

Hold-and-release three times with the window closed, then test — repeat the whole sequence if needed.

Does this apply to the rear windows?

Do the driver’s and front passenger’s windows as described; repeat the same hold routine on any other one-touch window.

If you’ve just reconnected the battery, our Fiesta Mk7 battery disconnect/reconnect guide lists the window relearn among the steps to redo.
