To change the wiper blades or lift them clear of the screen in winter on your DS 7 Crossback (2017–present), you first need to set the wipers to their service position — at rest they park under the bonnet lip out of reach. There’s no menu for it; it’s a quick stalk action with the ignition off. This is sometimes called the maintenance or winter position, and using it is completely normal — it is not a fault, warning, or sign that anything has gone wrong with the wiper system.
Why There’s a Service Position
When you switch off, the DS 7 Crossback parks its wiper arms low against the base of the windscreen, tucked beneath the bonnet lip and the plastic scuttle trim. That is exactly where you want them for driving — out of your line of sight and sheltered from the airflow — but it is the worst place to reach them for maintenance. If you try to prise an arm straight up from the parked position, the tip fouls the bonnet edge, and it is easy to bend the arm, crack the paint, or snap a blade clip in the process.
The service position solves that. It walks the arms up to a near-vertical stance in the middle of the glass, well clear of the surround, so they swing forward freely and you can work on both blades without fighting the bodywork. It also lets you stand the arms up off the screen in frost so the rubber doesn’t freeze flat against the glass overnight.
Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and make sure the wipers have finished their travel and settled at rest before you begin.
- Have your replacement blades unpacked and to hand so an arm never has to sit sprung-up for long.
- If the blades are frozen to the glass, free them gently first — lifting them while iced on can strain the linkage.
- Clear any built-up leaves or debris from the scuttle channel at the base of the screen while the arms are up.
- Work one arm at a time so a bare arm can’t spring back onto the glass while your hands are busy.
Setting the Service Position
- Switch the ignition off.
- Within about 1 minute, briefly operate the wiper stalk (the wipe action).
- The arms move up to the vertical / service position.
- You can now lift the arms off the glass to change blades or clean them.
The one-minute window is the part people miss. After you switch off, the wiper motor stays willing to accept the command only briefly; leave it too long and the stalk simply gives an ordinary wipe instead of climbing to the service position.
Returning the Wipers to Normal
Fold each arm back down flat onto the screen first, then switch the ignition on and operate the wipers — they run and settle back into the parked position under the scuttle. Don’t try to shove the arms back into their parked slot by hand against the motor, as forcing them can strain the linkage or throw the park point out of alignment.
If It Doesn’t Work
- You were too slow. Act within roughly a minute of switching off; if the stalk just wipes normally, switch off and try again promptly.
- Ignition state. The arms only climb after the ignition is off, not with it live — make sure you have actually switched off.
- Wipers weren’t parked. Let them finish and settle at rest before you switch off and give the stalk command.
- Blades frozen down. Iced-on blades can stall the motor; free them from the glass first.
- Only a light flick is needed. A brief operation of the stalk is enough — you don’t need to hold it.
- Still nothing? Cycle the ignition off again and repeat the sequence cleanly from the start.
Changing the Blades
With an arm raised, support it with one hand so it can’t spring back and strike the glass — a bare metal arm dropping onto a cold screen can chip or crack it. Most DS 7 Crossback blades use a common clip or hook fitting: release the catch where the blade meets the arm, slide the old blade off, and clip the new one on until it seats with a click. Check it is locked before you lower anything. When both blades are done, lower each arm gently onto the screen rather than letting it snap down.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I put the DS 7 Crossback wipers in service position?
Switch the ignition off, then within about a minute briefly operate the wiper stalk. The arms climb up the screen to the vertical service position, and you can then lift them off the glass to work on the blades.
Do I need any tools?
No. The whole thing is done from the wiper stalk with the ignition off — there are no menus, buttons, or workshop tools involved. You only need your hands and the replacement blades if you are renewing them.
How do I get the wipers back down?
Fold the arms flat onto the screen, switch the ignition on, and operate the wipers. They run through and re-park themselves under the scuttle. Avoid pushing them back by hand, which works against the motor.
Can I just lift the wipers from where they park?
It’s better not to. From the parked position the arm tips sit under the bonnet lip, so lifting them there risks bending an arm or marking the paint. The service position moves them clear first, which is why it exists.
Why won’t it enter the service position?
Almost always the timing: the stalk only lifts the arms if you use it within roughly a minute of switching the ignition off. Make sure the wipers were parked first, switch off, then give the stalk a brief operation straight away.
Does this reset anything on the car?
No. The service position is purely a mechanical park point for the wiper arms. It doesn’t clear service reminders or affect any other system. If you’re changing blades as part of a service, the oil or service light is a separate job.
Doing this as part of a service? Clear the reminder afterwards with our DS 7 Crossback service-indicator reset guide, and if a warning code came up while you were working, you can look it up on autodtcs.com.
