Reset the Service Indicator

These instructions apply to the Land Rover Defender Mk2 (L663) 2020-Present.

When the oil-service reminder appears on your Land Rover Defender (2020–present), the vehicle is prompting a scheduled service — it is a maintenance reminder, not a fault. On the L663 Defender you can reset the service counter yourself with a pedal sequence — no dealer for the routine oil reset. Here’s the owner method, plus what the reminder means and how to make sure the reset takes.

What the Service Reminder Means

The oil-service message on the L663 Defender comes from a service counter that measures distance and elapsed time since it was last cleared. When the count runs out, the reminder shows at start-up to prompt an oil-and-filter change and the scheduled checks. Because it is a maintenance prompt and not a diagnostic trouble code, it will keep reappearing until the counter is reset — even after the oil has been changed. The exact interval depends on your engine (petrol, diesel or plug-in hybrid) and how the Defender is used, so take the figure from your owner’s handbook and service book rather than a remembered number.

Keep the amber service prompt separate from a red warning that stays lit while you drive: the latter points to a stored fault, and resetting the service counter will not clear it.

First, a Few Checks

This resets the service/oil counter after an oil change. The car must be stationary, and you don’t start the engine during the sequence.

What the service (spanner) light means on the Land Rover Defender Mk2, and that a reset clears it after a service.

Reset only after the service is finished. Park on firm level ground with the vehicle in Park and the parking brake applied. Keep off the START button once the ignition is on so the engine stays off throughout. No tools are needed — just the pedals, bonnet and driver’s door.

Resetting the Service Indicator

  1. Switch the ignition on (don’t start the engine).
  2. Open the bonnet and open the driver’s door.
  3. Fully depress both the accelerator and brake pedals together and hold for about 10 seconds.
  4. The service reset display appears — release the pedals.
  5. Switch the ignition off, then on, and check the service indicator has gone out. Repeat if needed.

When a Dealer Tool Is Needed

The pedal method clears the oil counter. On some cars the full service-interval display won’t accept a reset this way — then the complete reset needs Land Rover diagnostic equipment. For a routine oil change, the pedal reset is usually all you need.

If the Reminder Won’t Clear

  • Hold both pedals fully for the full 10 seconds with the bonnet and driver’s door open — a part-press or an early release stops the reset registering.
  • Make sure the ignition is on and the engine is off — don’t press START, and don’t start the engine mid-sequence.
  • Cycle the ignition off and on to confirm the indicator has cleared, then run the whole sequence again from the start if it is still showing.
  • A separate warning light? A fault stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.

Once the Reset Is Done

Once the reset registers, the oil-service message clears from the display and does not return at the next start-up. The service counter restarts from zero and begins counting toward the next service. Nothing else on the vehicle is altered — the reset only clears the reminder, not any drivetrain, terrain or comfort setting. If the message comes straight back, the sequence didn’t complete and is worth repeating.

Reset Frequency

Reset the counter once per service, right after each oil-and-filter change. The correct distance or time between services depends on your Defender’s engine and use, so follow your owner’s handbook or service book rather than a fixed number from memory. Doing the reset at the same time as the work keeps the dash prompt in step with when the next service is genuinely due.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on a Land Rover Defender?

Ignition on, bonnet and driver’s door open, press the accelerator and brake together for 10 seconds, then cycle the ignition.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

Not for the oil-counter reset — that’s the pedal method. A full service-display reset can need a dealer tool on some cars.

Why must the bonnet and door be open?

The car only accepts the reset with the bonnet and driver’s door open and the ignition on.

Do I hold the pedals with the engine running?

No — the ignition should be on with the engine off. Don’t press START during the sequence; starting the engine will stop the reset taking.

Is the reset the same on the plug-in hybrid Defender?

Yes — the pedal reset for the oil counter is the same across the L663 range. The service interval itself can differ by engine, so check your handbook for the figure that applies to your Defender.

The light came back — why?

The reset probably didn’t register; repeat it, holding both pedals fully for the 10 seconds.
