When the oil-service reminder appears on your Range Rover Evoque (2019–present), you can reset the service counter yourself with a pedal sequence — no dealer for the routine oil reset. Here’s the owner method for the L551 Evoque.

The second-generation Evoque (chassis code L551) shows its maintenance reminder as a small spanner symbol, often paired with a “Service required” style message in the driver display. It is important to understand what this is: it is a mileage-and-time reminder, not a fault. The car has simply counted down the distance and days set for the next oil service and is telling you the interval has elapsed. Nothing is broken, and the engine is not in limp mode — the reminder is there purely to prompt the routine oil and filter change.

What the Service (Spanner) Light Means

The Evoque tracks its service interval on a simple counter that runs down as you drive and as time passes. When that counter reaches zero, the spanner appears at the next ignition-on. Because it is counting distance and elapsed days rather than measuring the oil directly, the reminder has no way of knowing that you have already changed the oil — it will keep showing until the counter is reset. That is why the reset is a separate, deliberate step you carry out after the work is finished. If the message is amber or red and accompanied by a different symbol (engine, oil-pressure, coolant), treat that as a possible fault rather than a routine reminder.

Before You Start

Only reset the counter after the oil and filter change is actually done. Resetting first just restarts the interval from the wrong point and hides the reminder while old oil keeps ageing. A few sensible checks before you begin:

  • Park on level ground, apply the electronic parking brake, and select P.
  • Have the ignition on but the engine off for the sequence — you do not start the engine at any point.
  • No tools are needed. The whole thing is done from the driver’s seat, plus opening the bonnet and door.
  • Give yourself a clear run of about 15 seconds so you can hold the pedals without interruption.

Resetting the Service Indicator

  1. Switch the ignition on (don’t start the engine).
  2. Open the bonnet and open the driver’s door.
  3. Fully depress both the accelerator and brake pedals together and hold for about 10 seconds.
  4. The service reset display appears — release the pedals.
  5. Switch the ignition off, then on, and check the service indicator has gone out. Repeat if needed.

When a Dealer Tool Is Needed

The pedal method clears the oil counter. On some cars the full service-interval display won’t accept a reset this way — then the complete reset needs Land Rover diagnostic equipment. For a routine oil change, the pedal reset is usually all you need, and most owners never have to go further than the sequence above.

If the Reset Doesn’t Work

If the spanner is still showing after you cycle the ignition, work through these before assuming anything is wrong:

  • Hold both pedals fully for the full 10 seconds with the bonnet and driver’s door open — a short or partial hold won’t register.
  • Make sure the engine is off, ignition on. Starting the engine mid-sequence cancels the reset.
  • Cycle the ignition off and on to confirm the indicator has cleared, then re-check.
  • If the display never shows the service-reset confirmation, switch everything off, wait a few seconds, and start the sequence again from the top.
  • A separate warning light? A genuine fault stores a diagnostic code — that is a different matter from the service timer and won’t clear with the pedal reset.

What to Expect After Resetting

Once the reset registers, the spanner disappears and the service counter starts again from a full interval. The driver display should show the message gone at the next ignition-on. There is no drive cycle to complete and nothing to “relearn” — the reminder is simply back to counting down toward the next service. If it clears and then returns days later, the reset most likely didn’t take the first time; run it again.

How Often to Reset It

Reset the counter every time you carry out an oil service — once per service, no more. The Evoque’s exact interval depends on engine, driving style and whether the car is on a fixed or condition-based schedule, so rather than quote a figure, check the interval recorded in your own vehicle handbook and match the reset to the work you have just done. The reminder is only ever as accurate as the last reset, so keeping the two in step is what matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset the service light on a 2019-on Range Rover Evoque?

Ignition on, bonnet and driver’s door open, press the accelerator and brake together for about 10 seconds until the service-reset display appears, then cycle the ignition off and on to confirm.

Do I need a diagnostic tool?

Not for the oil-counter reset — that’s the pedal method described above. A full service-display reset can need Land Rover diagnostic equipment on some cars, but for a routine oil change the pedal reset is normally enough.

Why must the bonnet and driver’s door be open?

The Evoque only accepts the pedal reset with the bonnet and driver’s door open and the ignition on. If either is closed, the sequence won’t enter the reset mode.

Do I start the engine during the reset?

No. The ignition is on but the engine stays off for the whole sequence. Starting it partway through cancels the reset.

The light came back after a few days — why?

The reset probably didn’t register. Repeat it, holding both pedals fully for the full 10 seconds, and confirm the service-reset display appears before releasing.

Does resetting the light mean the service is done?

No — the reset only clears the reminder. Always do the oil and filter change first; the counter has no way of knowing whether the work actually happened.
