Put the Electronic Parking Brake into Service Mode

The second-generation Land Rover Range Rover Evoque (L551, 2019–Present) uses motor-on-caliper electronic parking brakes (EPB) at the rear. Fitting new rear pads means winding those actuators fully back first, and on the L551 you can do that yourself with the built-in brake service (maintenance) mode — no Pathfinder or dealer scan tool needed for a standard pad change.

What brake service mode does and why you need it

On the L551 each rear caliper has its own electric actuator. When you park, the motor screws the piston out to clamp the disc and locks there mechanically. To change pads you must put the system into service mode so the actuators retract and stay retracted, giving the clearance to lift the caliper and seat new, thicker pads without the EPB clamping down on your hands.

How to enter brake service mode (Evoque L551)

  1. Park level, chock a front wheel and select P.
  2. Press Start without the brake pedal so the ignition is ON, engine off.
  3. Release the parking brake first: press the EPB switch down (or pull, depending on your switch action) until the red PARK icon disappears.
  4. Press and hold the EPB switch in the release position for about a second.
  5. Still holding it, press the accelerator flat to the floor (wide-open throttle) and hold for about a second.
  6. While holding both, press Start to switch the ignition OFF, then immediately press it again to switch ON.
  7. The rear actuators whirr as they wind back and the cluster shows “In Maintenance Mode” (or a brake service message). Release the accelerator and EPB switch.

With the actuators retracted you can remove the caliper guide bolt, hinge the caliper up and change the pads.

Never force the pistons back by hand

Do not lever, push or wind the EPB piston back manually, and never put a hydraulic wind-back tool against a powered caliper. The piston is moved by a geared electric motor; forcing it shears those gears and ruins the caliper. Retract electronically only through service mode. If the sequence refuses to engage, use a generic OBD EPB tool with Land Rover coverage — do not improvise with hand tools on the piston.

Exit service mode and bed in the new pads

After reassembly, exit by repeating the sequence with the EPB switch held in the apply position instead of release; the actuators re-tension and the maintenance message clears. Pump the brake pedal several times so the pistons take up the new pads before you move the car. Bed in by braking firmly from about 30 mph down to a crawl 6–8 times with cooling gaps between, then drive gently for the first 200 miles or so while the friction material cures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the L551 Evoque need a dealer tool for rear pads? No — the in-car maintenance mode retracts the EPB for a normal pad change. A generic EPB tool is only a fallback.

Why does my Evoque say I have only one attempt? The sequence is read once per ignition-on cycle. If it fails, switch fully off, back on, and start over from releasing the parking brake.

Is the L551 timing different from the older Evoque? The newer car often uses about a one-second hold on each step rather than two; if it won’t take, try the shorter holds.

Do I have to start the engine? No. Ignition ON, engine off is the correct state throughout.

What confirms it worked? The actuator whirr plus the “In Maintenance Mode” cluster message. If neither appears, re-run the sequence before opening the caliper.
