These instructions apply to the Alfa Romeo Giulia Mk1 (952) 2016-Present.

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016–present) — for a new battery, winter storage, or work near the airbags — catches owners out, because on this rear-drive Giorgio-platform saloon the battery isn’t under the bonnet, it’s in the boot.

Find the Battery First

The 12 V battery is in the luggage compartment (boot), under the floor/trim — the Giorgio platform puts it there for weight balance, like a BMW or Mercedes. There are remote jump terminals under the bonnet, but the battery you service is in the boot.

Disconnecting Safely

  1. Note your audio/security code if applicable, then switch everything off.
  2. Lift the boot floor to reach the battery, then disconnect the negative (−) terminal first, then the positive.
  3. Working near airbags or seat-belt pretensioners? Wait 10 minutes after disconnecting before such work.

Reconnecting and Re-initialising

Reconnect positive first, then negative, then wait 5 minutes before switching on so the modules wake correctly. The Giulia then relearns:

  • Power windows — one-touch may need re-initialising (hold the switch fully up/down at the limit).
  • Electric boot lid and sunroof (if fitted) relearn their travel.
  • Start/stop and steering-angle settle after a short drive; re-enter clock and presets.

If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards

  • Warning lights often clear after a short drive once the relearns complete.
  • A persistent light stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com.
  • Fit a like-for-like AGM battery — the Giulia’s start/stop needs the correct type.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the battery on an Alfa Romeo Giulia?

In the boot (luggage compartment) under the floor — the under-bonnet terminals are jump points only.

How long should I wait near the airbags?

Wait 10 minutes after disconnecting before working on airbags or pretensioners.

Which terminal first?

Negative (−) off first, reconnect it last; wait 5 minutes after reconnecting before switching on.

Do I need to recode anything?

Windows/roof/boot may need a one-touch relearn, and you’ll re-enter the clock and presets.

If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
