Reset the Power Windows

These instructions apply to the Alfa Romeo Giulia Mk1 (952) 2016-Present.
For other models, please choose your vehicle here.

If a window on your Alfa Romeo Giulia (2016–present) has lost its one-touch up/down — usually after a flat or disconnected 12 V battery, or after a fuse change — you can re-initialise it yourself in under a minute. No tools. This is a normal side-effect of losing power, not a fault with the motor or switch, and nothing needs replacing.

Why It Happens

Each window’s control module learns its fully-up and fully-down stops. Cut the power and that memory is lost, so one-touch and anti-pinch stop working until you re-teach the limits.

How the Window System Works on the Giulia

Each door’s module stores the exact top and bottom positions of the glass. Those stored limits are what let the window run on its own with a single press and what let the anti-pinch reverse the glass if it meets resistance near the top of travel. When the 12 V supply is interrupted — a flat battery, a disconnection for service, or a blown fuse — the module still drives the motor but no longer knows the limits, so the glass will only move while you hold the switch. Re-teaching writes those limits back and the automatic functions return.

First, a Few Checks

  • Turn the ignition on so the windows have full power for the learn.
  • Keep the door closed so the glass reaches its true closed stop.
  • Check the 12 V battery is healthy — a weak battery can abort the learn part-way.
  • Clear the run channel of ice, grit or a lifted seal so the glass travels freely.
  • Work on one window at a time from its own switch.

Re-initialising a Window

Do this with the door closed and the ignition on, one window at a time:

  1. Pull the switch up and hold it until the window is fully closed; keep holding for 2–3 seconds after it stops.
  2. Press the switch down and hold until the window is fully open; keep holding for 2–3 seconds after it stops.
  3. Pull up again to fully close and hold briefly — one-touch and anti-pinch are now relearned.
  4. Repeat for each affected window.

If It Still Won’t One-Touch

  • Hold the switch the full 2–3 seconds past each limit — letting go early aborts the learn.
  • Do it with the door shut so the glass reaches its true closed position.
  • Check the window fuse if a door is completely dead — the motor needs power for the learn to finish.
  • Run the cycle slowly and try it two or three times; a rushed cycle is the usual reason the limit doesn’t take.
  • A faulty regulator or switch can block the learn — any stored fault can be looked up on autodtcs.com.

Once It’s Done

Once the limits are stored, a single press runs the window fully up or down on its own and the anti-pinch reverse works again near the top. The setting holds until the next power loss, so you should only need to repeat it after another battery disconnect or fuse change — not as routine maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my Giulia’s window stop going up with one touch?

The window module lost its learned limits, usually after a battery disconnection or fuse change. Until you re-teach them, the glass will only move while you hold the switch. Holding the switch fully up, then fully down, then up again restores one-touch and anti-pinch. It is a normal after-effect of losing power, not a fault.

How do I reset the windows?

Hold the switch fully up (and a few seconds more), then fully down, then up again, one window at a time. Do it with the door shut and the ignition on, then test that a single press runs the glass on its own.

Do I need any tools?

No — it’s done entirely with the window switch and the ignition on. There is no menu or scan tool involved; the whole procedure is hold-up, hold-down, hold-up on each affected door.

It still won’t work — now what?

Repeat carefully holding the limits; if it still fails, a regulator or switch fault may be stored — check autodtcs.com.

Do I have to relearn every window?

Only the ones that lost one-touch. Re-teach each affected door from its own switch. Any window that still runs automatically kept its memory and can be left alone, so you may only need to do the driver’s door.

Could a blown fuse be the real problem?

Yes. If a window is completely dead rather than just missing one-touch, check the relevant fuse before re-teaching, as the learn can’t complete without power to the motor. If the fuse is sound and the glass still won’t move, a switch or regulator fault may be stored.

If the windows dropped out after a battery change, see our Giulia battery disconnect/reconnect guide.
