These instructions apply to the Jeep Wrangler Mk2 (TJ) 1997-2006.

After a service on your Jeep Wrangler (1997–2006) — the TJ — you can clear the service-interval reminder yourself from the dashboard menu (on models fitted with the service-interval display). No diagnostic tool needed. The reminder is a maintenance prompt, not a fault warning: it simply counts down the distance and time set at the last service, and when it reaches zero it asks you to have the work done and the counter reset. Nothing is wrong with the vehicle — the display is just doing its job of keeping the service schedule on track.

What the Service-Interval Display Means
Where fitted, the TJ’s service-interval display keeps a running count of the distance remaining until the next scheduled service. It is a straightforward count-down based on distance and elapsed time rather than any live reading of the oil, so it does not know whether the oil has actually been changed — it only knows that the interval it was set to has run out. When it reaches its limit it prompts you with the service reminder. Clearing that reminder restarts the count for the next interval; it has no effect on the condition of the oil, which is why the reset should always follow the actual maintenance.
Note that not every Wrangler TJ was built with this service-interval display. If your instrument cluster has no service menu at all, there is no owner reset to perform — the car simply relies on you following the maintenance schedule in the handbook.
Before You Begin
Only reset after the service is done so the interval stays accurate. You’ll use the trip-computer buttons on the instrument cluster.

A few things to have in place before you begin:
- Park on level ground with the parking brake set.
- Turn the ignition on but leave the engine off — the reset is done with the ignition live, not running.
- Locate the trip-computer buttons on the cluster (including the MENU and C/T buttons used below).
- No tools or scan equipment are needed — this is done entirely from the dashboard.
Resetting the Service Indicator
- Turn the ignition on (engine off).
- Press the ‘MENU’ button and scroll until the ‘interval until service 0 km’ display appears.
- Press and hold the reset button — a signal sounds and the original mileage / next service type is shown.
- Press the ‘C/T’ button to confirm, then turn the ignition off.
If the Reminder Won’t Clear
If the service message is still showing, run back through these points:
- Make sure you’re on the service-interval display before pressing reset — scrolling the MENU to the right screen is what tells the cluster which value to clear.
- Hold reset until the signal sounds and the new interval shows; releasing before the confirmation tone leaves the old value in place.
- Confirm with C/T — skipping the confirmation step can leave the reset incomplete.
- Cycle the ignition and try again — switch off, wait a few seconds, switch back on and repeat the sequence.
- A separate warning light? A fault stores a code — look it up on autodtcs.com. That is a different matter from the service-interval reminder and won’t clear through this menu.
After the Reset
Once you have confirmed with C/T and switched off, the service-interval display should show the full distance to the next service again, and the reminder message should not reappear when you next switch on. If it comes straight back, the reset most likely didn’t complete — work through the troubleshooting above and repeat the sequence.
How Often You’ll Need This
Reset the service-interval display after every scheduled service, once the oil and filter change and any other due work has been carried out. The count then restarts for the next interval. For the exact distance and time figures that apply to your Wrangler, follow the maintenance schedule in your Jeep owner’s handbook rather than relying on a fixed number, as the intervals depend on the engine and how the vehicle is used.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reset the service light on a Jeep Wrangler TJ?
Ignition on, MENU button to the service-interval display, hold reset until it beeps, press C/T, then switch off.
Do I need a diagnostic tool?
No — the menu reset is owner-doable on cars with the service-interval display.
My Wrangler has no service menu — why?
Not all variants have the service-interval display; if yours doesn’t, there’s no owner reset to perform — just follow the maintenance schedule in the handbook.
When should I reset it?
Only after the service is completed, so the next interval is correct. Resetting beforehand throws the schedule out.
Does the engine need to run?
No — turn the ignition on with the engine off for the whole procedure.
The reminder came back after I reset it — what now?
The reset probably didn’t finish. Make sure you were on the correct service-interval screen, hold reset until the tone sounds, confirm with C/T, then cycle the ignition and check again.
