These instructions apply to the Jeep Wrangler Mk1 (YJ) 1991-1996.

Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Jeep Wrangler (1991–1996) — the YJ — is about as simple as this job gets. The YJ is an old-school, mechanically honest 4×4 with very little electronic complication, so taking the battery off to fit a new one, to lay the truck up over winter, to recover after a jump-start, or just to work on the electrics is quick and stress-free. As long as you remove and refit the terminals in the correct order there is almost nothing for the truck to relearn, and none of it needs a garage or diagnostic tool.
Where the 12 V Battery Is
On the YJ Wrangler the 12 V battery is in the engine compartment, in the front corner, held down by a simple clamp and easy to reach with the bonnet up. The two terminals sit on top: the negative (−) post carries the black lead and the earth strap to the body, and the positive (+) post carries the red lead, often under a red plastic cover. Confirm which post is which before you touch a spanner — that single check keeps the whole job simple and safe.
Before You Begin
- Turn the ignition fully off, take the key out and close the doors so nothing is drawing power.
- Switch off the lights, the heater fan and anything else that was on.
- If your radio uses a security code, note it before you disconnect so you can re-enter it later.
- Give it a minute or two after switching off for everything to settle.
- Wear gloves and eye protection, and have the correct spanner (usually a 10 mm) to hand.
Disconnecting the Battery
- Make sure the ignition is off and everything electrical is switched off.
- Loosen the clamp on the negative (−) terminal first, lift the connector off the post and set it aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery.
- Undo and remove the positive (+) terminal, keeping the bare lead clear of any metal.
- Lift the battery out, or carry on with your work on it, as needed.
Reconnecting the Battery
- Refit the positive (+) terminal first and tighten the clamp snug.
- Refit the negative (−) terminal last and tighten it the same way.
- Check that neither clamp can be twisted by hand — a loose earth is the usual reason for odd behaviour after a battery job.
What You’ll Need to Reset Afterwards
The YJ is a simple vehicle electrically, so there is very little to put right:
- Clock and radio presets — re-enter these, plus the radio security code if your unit uses one.
- Key remote — if your remote stops locking the doors, you can re-programme it yourself; see our YJ remote-programming guide (later YJs with central locking).
- Idle — on fuel-injected models the engine may run a little rough at first and settle as it relearns its idle over a few minutes.
If a Warning Light Stays On or the Truck Feels Off
- Recheck both terminal clamps are tight — a slightly loose connection is the most common cause.
- On injected models, let the engine run and drive a short distance so the idle can relearn and settle.
- Re-programme the key remote if it has stopped locking the doors.
- Rule out a genuinely flat or old battery before assuming a deeper fault.
- On injected models, read any stored code and check its meaning on autodtcs.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the battery on a Jeep Wrangler YJ?
In the engine compartment, in the front corner, held down by a simple clamp. The negative (−) and positive (+) terminals are on top and easy to reach.
Which terminal do I disconnect first?
Take the negative (−) terminal off first, then the positive. Reconnect the other way round: positive on first, negative on last.
Will I lose anything by disconnecting the battery?
Almost nothing. You will need to re-enter the clock and radio presets, and re-programme the key remote if it stops locking. Injected models relearn their idle after a short run.
Does a new battery need coding on the YJ?
No. A like-for-like battery of the correct capacity fits straight in with no coding on this generation — just reconnect in order and reset your presets.
Why does it idle oddly after reconnecting?
Fuel-injected YJs relearn their idle after a few minutes of running. Let the engine warm up and idle for a short while and it should settle back to normal.
Can I jump-start it instead of disconnecting the battery?
Yes. If the battery is simply flat, a jump-start gets you moving without removing anything. You only need to disconnect it to replace the battery or to work on the electrics.
If a warning light stays on after reconnecting, look up the code on autodtcs.com.
