Disconnecting the 12 V battery on your Porsche 718 Boxster or Cayman (2016–present) — the 982 — catches owners out, because on this mid-engined car the battery isn’t with the engine, it’s in the front luggage compartment.
Find the Battery First
The 12 V battery is in the front luggage compartment, under the carpet/floor trim. (The engine sits behind the cabin, so don’t look for the battery there.)
Disconnecting Safely
- Switch the ignition off and keep keyless transmitters well away (outside range) so the car can’t wake up.
- Lift the front-compartment floor trim, then disconnect the negative (−) earth cable first, then the positive.
- Working near airbags or pretensioners? Insulate the earth cable and wait about a minute before such work.
Reconnecting and Re-initialising
Reconnect positive first, then negative. The 718 then relearns:
- Power windows — one-touch needs re-initialising (see our 718 window-reset guide).
- Steering angle and assistance settle after a short drive.
- Re-enter the clock and presets.
If Something Isn’t Right Afterwards
- Warning lights often clear after a short drive.
